Greetings NEC Families,

As we finish up another week at NEC, I want to acknowledge the challenges that many of us may be facing due to the ongoing government shutdown. November Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits have not been disbursed, impacting more than 100,000 Denver residents. Learning cannot happen if students are hungry.

Please know that school breakfast and lunch will continue as normal and will remain free to all families. If you are in need of food, the Far Northeast Community Hub has a mini market (Google Form) where you can shop for free food. DPS has also put together a list of free food locations around the city.

Please let us know if there is anything we can do to support you during this time!

With Gratitude,

Jennifer Warren

🌱 Weekly Resource Highlight: Utilities Support

Did you know that the Far Northeast Community Hub has a ton of community resources? Each week, we're going to share details on a service that they offer.

Support with utilities and health bills: The Hub offers assistance with utility bills, health and dental referrals, benefit applications, baby supplies, rental assistance referrals β€” and so much more! Register here for support (Google Form).

Don't forget: if you are in need of food, you can pick up free food at the Hub's mini market (Google Form) or check out this newsletter from DPS on additional local food resources.

πŸ‚ Denver LeafDrop Program: Compost Your Pumpkins and Leaves!

The Denver LeafDrop program allows residents to drop off fallen leaves and pumpkins for composting at five locations on Nov. 8 and 9, with additional weekday sites open until Nov. 21.

Compost created through Denver’s LeafDrop Program is made available to Denver residents for free in the spring! Trash customers can sign up for free compost service at www.denvergov.org/compost.

πŸ’‘ Did You Know We Have Innovation Status?

In case you missed it: at NEC, we have "Innovation Status", which means DPS enables us to use our funds in creative ways to promote all kinds of learning experiences for students! For example, we can provide our staff with additional stipends to run after-school programs like National Honor Society. We are in the process of renewing this status so that it applies for the next three years.
