Dear Swigert Families,

We’re excited to share that our 8th Annual Swigert Service Day is happening this Friday, May 8th! As an IB World School, we deeply value opportunities for our students to engage in meaningful, real-world service learning. These experiences not only strengthen the IB Learner Profile traits but also empower our students to take thoughtful, self-initiated action in their communities.

Service Day will begin with a special school-wide assembly in the gym, where students will learn about the incredible organizations we’re supporting and hear from an inspiring guest speaker who makes a real difference in the Denver community and beyond: Kyle Clark, 9News journalist and philanthropist. We are honored to welcome him back to Swigert for the 2nd year!

Kyle Clark is a well-known 9News reporter and the creator of Word of Thanks, a weekly micro-giving campaign that has raised over $18 million for small- to mid-sized Colorado nonprofits since 2020.

After the assembly, students will head back to their classrooms (or designated spaces) to dive deeper into the missions of the nonprofits they’ll be supporting. They’ll then take part in hands-on service projects that directly benefit these organizations. This year’s partners include:

Lunch will be served outside- cookout style and students will also get a chance to do a hands on garden project with their class- please dress appropriately for the weather and in Swigert blue!

Thank you for your continued support in helping our students grow into compassionate, action-oriented global citizens. We look forward to a powerful day of learning, service, and community!

Note from Shelby Dennis:

It’s that time of year that I share about any staff leaving. It’s always difficult to say goodbye, but especially to some of the longstanding team members- we have three members moving on that have been with our community for over ten years, incredible. 

If you or your child would like to write a letter of appreciation or memories for these awesome Swigert staff we will have baskets in the front lobby with their names on them starting tomorrow, Wednesday.

Richard Fisher: Para Professional, Dean of Students and Dean of Operations has been at our school for the past 15 years serving in a myriad of roles, but mostly making sure our community events run smoothly and building relationships with students and families. He will be sorely missed. 

Caroline Dane: Fourth Grade Teacher, Literacy Interventionist, IB Coordinator , has been at our school for 15 years serving in different capacities and always putting students first. She leads with her whole heart and a contagious smile. She has elevated important components of our IB school including service learning, international mindedness and meaningful units tied to authentic learning. She will be sorely missed. 

Gale Vigil : ECE Para Professional has been at our school for 11 years, serving our youngest learners and stepping in to help out whenever the school needs any kind of help. She is willing to support wherever and whenever there is need and does it will a positive attitude. She will be sorely missed.

May 20th: Student Led Conferences

Students will share their learning in the classroom for ECE_4th grade students in this open house. Please look for more information from your child’s teacher. 

May 22nd: Swigert Field Day

Mr. Shutts organizes a day where all students participate in a variety of activities; including but not limited to relay races, hurdles, shoe toss, tug a war and water games. We split the day into two and ECE-2 goes in the morning and 3-5 in the afternoon. Parents are welcome to come watch. 

 May 27th Annual Swigert Alumni Clap out 

Seniors from across the metro area return to Swigert in their caps and gowns to walk the halls of the school. Our ECE_5th grade students clap out our alum in this special ceremony. It brings a lot of joy and tears! 2:50-3:05.

May 28th 5th grade Clap out, Exhibition Share, and Continuation 

Our fifth grade students have a great deal going on this day. Our students clap out the 5th graders at dismissal. In the evening, the 5th graders share their exhibition presentations to the community and then we have a continuation ceremony. 

May 29th: Last Day of School - Noon Dismissal

Last Thursday, we had one of our favorite events of the year, International Night. This event helps remind us of the beauty found in diversity. We are privileged to have representation from various corners of the world, each bringing with them a unique piece of their heritage and culture.

Thank you to all the students, teachers, parents, and volunteers who have worked to make this event possible. And a huge thank you to Tabitha Jones for leading the planning of the event!

Early Bird DPS Online Registration opens today. You will do this process every year that you have a student in DPS. Registration provides us updated student and family information on file, including emergency contacts, health information and more.  Online registration can only be completed by the parent/guardian listed in the primary household of the student record.

You will need your student's ID number to start this process. If you do not have that, you can look it up here or email one of the staff listed below.

The BOGO Book Fair is back, double the books for summer reading!

Shopping is open from:

May 18th - 19th: 7:45 AM - 4:00 PM
May 20th: 7:45 AM - 5:30 PM (open during conferences)

Most classrooms will also visit the fair once during school hours. If you would like your child to have the opportunity to shop independently, consider using the E-wallet. The E-wallet allows you to add a fixed amount of money into your child’s account for use at the book fair.  Please visit our homepage for more information

The fair also accepts credit cards and cash. Due to the discontinuation of the penny, cash payments may be rounded up to the nearest dollar when we run low on change. Any rounded-up amount received will be donated to the Swigert Share the Fair which provides funds for in-need Swigert students to receive a free book.

Garden Committee: Help still needed!

The PTA Garden Committee is looking for volunteers to help get the garden up and running for the year. Please join us for a family day in the garden Saturday May 9th from 9:00am - 12:00pm. We will be adding soil and compost to the beds, cleaning up and planting. Parents, grandparents, siblings and neighbors are welcome to join!

The Denver Public Library’s Summer of Adventure program invites youth from birth through 12th grade to learn, grow, and have fun all summer long!

When school is out, DPL provides exciting opportunities to explore, create, and discover—whether at the library, in the community, or right in your own neighborhood. Meet experts, try new activities, and find fresh ways to enjoy reading with books, eBooks, and audiobooks.

Through hands-on experiences, Summer of Adventure helps youth of all ages and abilities build academic skills, develop creativity, and strengthen social-emotional growth - all while having a blast and earning books and prizes!

ELCSports is hosting a summer camp at Manual High School June 8 - July 24. This camp is available for rising 3rd through 6th grade students. Below is some more general information about the camp and there are flyers attached that can be shared with families. 

Camp Information: 

Location: Manual High School 1700 E 28th Ave, Denver, CO 80205

Dates: 6/8-7/24 (no camp 6/29-7/3) 

Time: 8:30am-4:30pm

Cost: 5 day camp = $300, 4 day camp = $240 (6/15-6/18 only) 

MySpark available for qualifying rising 6th graders (flyer attached) 

Campers will participate in sport rotations, competitions, and non-sport activities including walking field trips (City Park, Fishing, Inflatables, and more), team challenges, and SEAL activities.
