Northeast Early College Policy for Cellphones and Other Devices

Aug. 4, 2026

Dear Wolfpack Families,

Beginning with the 2026-27 school year, Denver Public Schools has adopted a policy that limits when students can use their personal communication devices (such as cellphones). This will minimize distractions in the classroom and support focus and learning.

A “personal communication device” (PCD) is, but is not limited to:

  • Cellphones.
  • Smart or electronic watches.
  • Wireless earbuds and earphones.
  • Personally owned tablets and laptops.
  • Non-district issued computing devices.
  • Any other personally owned portable electronic communication devices.

When PCDs are accessible during the school day, it creates distraction that impacts the learning environment for both students and staff. For more information on why this policy is important, visit the Denver Public Schools website.

What should students do with their PCDs?

PCDs should be turned off and kept out of sight while students are on campus during the school day. This includes during class time, passing periods, lunch periods, restroom breaks and field trips.

How will PCDs be stored?

PCDs should be stored in backpacks, bags or purses. PCDs should not be stored in pockets.

How can guardians communicate with their students?

Students will still be able to get in touch with parents, guardians, employers and others during the school day. During the first week of school, teachers will review the policy with students to ensure understanding and compliance.

Students will have access to school phones in order to call home or in case of emergency. The use of school phones will not interfere with classroom instruction. Students who require access to technology, that may include a Personal Technology Device (PTD), in order to access a free appropriate public education (FAPE) will have their needs addressed as part of their Section 504 plan or Individual Education Program (IEP) that will supersede this Policy.

Electronic Device Expectations & Intervention Protocols

First Bell-to- Last Bell Expectations:

  • Devices: Cell phones, smartwatches, earbuds, headphones, tablets, non-school laptops.
  • When: Entire school day, including instruction, passing, and lunch.
  • Student Expectation: Keep personal devices powered off and stored out of sight.

After a verbal warning and redirect has been given to the student, asking them to put their phone or electronic device away in their backpack, bag or purse, the following steps will be taken:

  • First Distraction: Surrender device to staff. Pickup from office at 3:35pm.
  • Second Distraction: Surrender device. Guardian contacted. Guardian must pick up from office at 3:35pm.
  • Third Distraction: Surrender device. Student and guardian pick up at 3:35pm. Daily check-in at office for 3 weeks.
  • Fourth Distraction: Daily check-in for 6 weeks or leave at home. Restorative interventions explored.

** If a student chooses not to surrender or store their phone when requested, the student's family will be contacted to partner with the Culture Team and school administration to determine appropriate next steps and support the student's successful adherence to the school's electronic device expectations. The incident will be recorded as a Fourth Distraction in accordance with the school's progressive response process. The district is not responsible for lost, theft or destruction of PCDs on school property.
