March is National Athletic Trainer Month

Athletic Trainers pose in front of Darryl Miller Sports Medicine Complex

Did you know Athletic Trainers (ATs) are highly skilled health care professionals who do far more than wrap ankles? They’re the first line of defense in sports medicine, providing:

  • Injury prevention and risk management.

  • Emergency care and life-saving interventions.

  • Clinical evaluation and diagnosis.

  • Treatment and rehabilitation.

  • Return-to-play decisions.

Whether it’s a Friday night football game or a professional sports arena, ATs are there making split-second decisions that protect athletes’ health and safety. They’re the health care professionals who know their athletes inside and out, building trust and relationships that last entire seasons and careers.

Fun fact: Athletic Trainers save the health care system millions annually through preventive care and immediate access to care!

Digital Accessibility Tip: Emails

In June 2021, Colorado passed House Bill 21-1110 to strengthen state discrimination laws for people with disabilities. The bill makes sure that everyone has access to digital content created by local government organizations, including school districts.

To create an accessible email, follow
Google’s tips on adding alt text, creating informative links and other ways to organize and format your email. For approved colors and fonts, refer to the DPS Brand Snapshot. More information can be found on the DPS Accessibility Information webpage. Look out for more digital accessibility tips in future issues of Team DPS Weekly!

DPS Facility Management Department Hosts Job Shadow Day

A student and a facility management department team member work together on assembling construction.

On Wednesday, March 13, the DPS Facility Management Department lived our Shared Core Value of Students First by hosting six DPS high school students for a Job Shadow Day. Students got a taste of various trades such as carpentry, electrical and plumbing. Doug Norton, Maintenance Operations Manager for Plumbing, said, "We had a great time with Leonardo. He was able to meet most of the techs towards the end of the afternoon and the guys were very open and talkative." Leonardo, a student at Legacy Options High School, also enjoyed the experience. "If you ever do the job shadow again, I would love to go again. It was really fun! I learned a lot."

Collaboration

"Oliviah consistently demonstrates exceptional collaborative skills that elevate her colleagues, her team and our department. Her approach to teamwork is characterized by genuine openness to others' perspectives, active listening, and a remarkable ability to synthesize diverse viewpoints into cohesive action plans.

Oliviah's collaborative spirit extends beyond our immediate team. She has forged valuable partnerships with other departments and community organizations that have brought new resources to our students, families and staff.

What truly sets Oliviah apart is her natural ability to bridge divides. She regularly seeks input from colleagues with different learning styles and backgrounds, recognizing that our diversity of thought is our greatest strength. When collaboration becomes difficult, she maintains a positive attitude that inspires others to remain engaged in the process.
