Nominate a Student and Adult for the Asian Education Advisory Council Annual Awards
The Asian Education Advisory Council (AEAC) seeks to empower Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) students in DPS by promoting positive AAPI identities and active engagement with their schools and communities. Every year, the AEAC recognizes DPS students, ECE-12th grade, who demonstrate positive AAPI identities. In addition, we want to recognize DPS teachers, SSPs, administrators and staff for promoting the active engagement of AAPI students in their schools.
We are accepting nominations for the 2025 Awards now through March 10. For students in third grade and up, we ask that they submit a short essay about how elements of AAPI cultures have helped them be successful in DPS.

Sonia Geerdes
Principal, McKinley-Thatcher Elementary
Collaboration
"Sonia has worked with families who have children with high needs and made our school a safe and effective environment for them to learn in. She has listened to, and worked with all teachers and specials teachers on the development of a new schedule next year that will meet teachers needs and in turn have a positive impact on students and families. Sonia knows that her staff are more than just teachers and has worked to make relationships transformative. She has listened to the personal needs of staff and has been flexible with meeting those needs in addition to fulfilling the mission and vision of the school."
