Black Student Success (BSS): Cultivating Joy in the Classroom

The Black Student Success (BSS) Director, Michael Atkins, and his team visited the BSS Learning Lab Schools for Instructional Rounds at Lowry Elementary School and Columbine Elementary School.

A core part of the
BSS Purpose Statement is to, “co-create joyful experiences where the excellence of our Black students shines and their brilliance knows no bounds.” In alignment with the BSS Purpose Statement, BSS asked educators during this visit how they cultivate joy in their classrooms and invited students to share what brings them joy at school. Hear their thoughtful responses!

Living Our DPS Honoree

Joe Lucero
Teacher, Traylor Academy
Students First

"Mr. Lucero has been a steady force for doing what's best for kids and community for over two decades at Traylor. Joe leads with students first because he provides so many opportunities in and out of the classroom to help students build confidence, self esteem, character and good habits. He uses student leaders to demonstrate new tasks, has a color guard group each morning, and has older students lead games at field day for younger students. In Joe's PE classroom, you'll hear positive affirmations, talks about sportsmanship and many connections to real life. In addition, Mr. Lucero shines at community collaboration. His events, like the Pumpkin Run, draw hundreds of visitors each year. He also collaborates with businesses to secure extra funding and donations to keep equipment and materials refreshed and in good condition for our students. You can really see the impact he's made when students come back after graduation to visit him and light up. We are so incredibly fortunate to have Mr. Lucero in our school family."
