The Power of Literacy

Dear Educators,

Literacy is more than an academic skill—it's a civil right and an ultimate lever to accelerating the trajectory for our historically underserved and underestimated students. Ensuring every learner is able to demonstrate proficiency across the domains of literacy lays the foundation for their future, and positioning our students to pursue their passions and write their own success narrative.

As we reflect on our recent READ screening data, we want to highlight its importance and implications for our students' success.  These brief assessments, equivalent to a “routine checkup” are intended to signal where students may need additional support.  They offer clear indicators of risk and benchmarks against national peers. While they should feel low-stakes for students as well as teachers, the information they provide is invaluable and actionable.

Whether you administered the screening immediately or after a few weeks, the key is how we use this data. Remember, these results aren't static— many of you have already been responsive to this data and adjusting instruction accordingly for weeks.

While many of us are focused on moving more students to grade-level, plus, - we also need to reduce the number of students significantly below grade level (SBGL). This requires us to continue to focus on tier 1 instruction, while using our newly adopted tier 3 resources to be responsive to screener and diagnostic data. We want to acknowledge that we now have quality tools and resources to help us meet each student's needs.

Your dedication is vital in this process. Together, we can turn these insights into action and help ensure that Every Learner Thrives.

Measuring the Unseen: Indoor Quality Air Sensor Installations

As part of our ongoing commitment to safe and healthy learning environments for all students, beginning this week, Facility Management’s Environmental Services team will install real-time indoor air quality (IAQ) sensors in all school classrooms in district-owned buildings. Sensors are currently installed in 10-20% of classrooms. Installing sensors across the district allows Facility Management to record, monitor and analyze real-time indoor air parameters. This will also allow us to make scientific and data-driven decisions around making improvements in DPS buildings and proposing district investments in mechanical ventilation systems in DPS school buildings. Learn more about IAQ and the upcoming installations.

Nonverbal Communication: We Are Always Communicating Even in Our Silence

As shared last month, how we verbally communicate is crucial. Even more critical is how we communicate nonverbally. Often, our actions might unknowingly communicate for us even when we are not saying a word. By being mindful of our verbal and nonverbal communication, we can more effectively navigate conflicts, enhance understanding and work toward a resolution that respects all parties involved.

For more information on the importance of nonverbal communication, access this resource for insights on effective communication practices.

Coming up next month: the importance of active listening. Learn more about our office by reading the 2023-24 Ombuds Annual Report.
