Dear Educators,
Literacy is more than an academic skill—it's a civil right and an ultimate lever to accelerating the trajectory for our historically underserved and underestimated students. Ensuring every learner is able to demonstrate proficiency across the domains of literacy lays the foundation for their future, and positioning our students to pursue their passions and write their own success narrative.
As we reflect on our recent READ screening data, we want to highlight its importance and implications for our students' success. These brief assessments, equivalent to a “routine checkup” are intended to signal where students may need additional support. They offer clear indicators of risk and benchmarks against national peers. While they should feel low-stakes for students as well as teachers, the information they provide is invaluable and actionable.
Whether you administered the screening immediately or after a few weeks, the key is how we use this data. Remember, these results aren't static— many of you have already been responsive to this data and adjusting instruction accordingly for weeks.
While many of us are focused on moving more students to grade-level, plus, - we also need to reduce the number of students significantly below grade level (SBGL). This requires us to continue to focus on tier 1 instruction, while using our newly adopted tier 3 resources to be responsive to screener and diagnostic data. We want to acknowledge that we now have quality tools and resources to help us meet each student's needs.
Your dedication is vital in this process. Together, we can turn these insights into action and help ensure that Every Learner Thrives.
