Dear Swigert Families,

Yay, it was so great to see so many community members at the Halloween Parade and Trunk or Treat last week, I lost count but I know it was hundreds. A huge shout out to our PTA for hosting this inclusive community event and all of our CREATIVE trunks, amazing! You can view all the trunks here.

Not only is it election day across the country, it is election day at Swigert. Our Student Council representatives ran for different positions including spirit director, communications director, president and vice president. They presented their speeches today during an assembly with our third, fourth and fifth grade students. There were some convincing suggestions including ideas for improving school lunch, having more spirit days, and bringing back student Swigert News. It was a relevant way to share about the voting process and have students engage in an authentic example - please see photos below. I was so impressed with our risk takers and communicators as they shared their ideas for Swigert - truly inspiring!

Thank you for your generous donations of food items for our food drive. Please reach out with any questions or wonderings you may have!

Sincerely,

Shelby Dennis

SAC Survey

Our School Accountability Committee conducts a school wide survey each year to provide feedback on inclusivity and engagement. We have two versions, a one minute survey if you don't have a lot of time and a 5-10 minute one if you have some more time.

Here are the links:

  • Here is the one minute survey

  • And here is the extended survey

Fall Food Drive!

1

Our Fall Food Drive for the Swigert Food Pantry is Nov. 3-7th. The Food Pantry makes a significant difference for families who need additional food supports at home. Please consider donating the following:

  • ECE - PB/jelly

  • Kinder / Autism Class - Individually packaged snacks

  • 1st - Canned chicken/tuna/protein

  • 2nd - Cereal and oatmeal

  • 3rd - Pasta/ramen/ spaghetti sauce

  • 4th - Rice and beans (canned or dry)

  • 5th - Canned veggies/fruit

  • ALL - Clean, cloth reusable bags (not paper or plastic)

Donations can be brought to class. We prefer smaller cans/jars/bottles. Students carry items home, so smaller portions (not Costco size) are easier to carry!

Should your family find your needs changing, please reach out to richard_fisher@dpsk12.net. He helps facilitate the completely anonymous Food Pantry and Critical Needs programs.

A Note from our Family Support Team:

Swigert Community,

The Family Support Team is reaching out to ask for your support during what may be a difficult time for many people in our community.  Due to the current Federal Government shutdown, many people may be impacted and be experiencing food insecurity.

To that end, we am reaching out to the entire community in regards to two issues.

First, if your current situation has changed and you are looking for support, we would like to help you during this uncertain time.  Whether it is due to SNAP benefits being suspended, or you are currently furloughed due to the shutdown, we are happy to provide either food, or when possible, gift cards for supermarkets that will allow you to shop for yourself.  For additional questions, or to request support, please email Mr. Fisher at richard_fisher@dpsk12.net.

Second, we are looking for monetary donations that will be used to fund both ongoing food needs, and additionally, will provide Thanksgiving food support, as we head into our traditional break.  If you are able to, I am accepting donations via venmo at @Swigert-Richard_Fisher.  If you would prefer to make a cash donation, you can leave in the front office with Ms. Krystie.

Thanks for your continued generosity.

Art: November Artists of the Month!

1

November’s Artists of the Month are Aisa Watkins and James Sponsler in Ms. Page’s 2nd grade class. Both Aisa and James have been leaders in their class and they showed Open-Mindedness with their art projects. They were risk takers and very knowledgeable with their free choice art projects. Aisa also is a very caring helper when students need guidance. James is great with being an Inquirer when he creates art. Here they are with their take on the 4th grade leaf project. Way to go!

Book Fair

book fair

We are thrilled to host our in-person Scholastic book fair benefitting our school from Monday, November 10th to Wednesday, November 12th (online purchases can be made anytime between Nov 7-Nov 20)!

Our book fair will be running during the following times :

  • Monday, Nov 10th: 8 am-12 pm & 12:30 pm-4:30 pm

  • Tuesday, Nov 11th: 7:30 am-12 pm & 12:30 pm-4:30 pm

  • Wednesday, Nov 12th: 7:30 am-12 pm & 12:30 pm-5:30 pm

Students can easily shop during the time slot their teacher has chosen over the 3-day sale period. To see what time slot their teacher has signed up for, click on the sign up genius link down below. This should be fully updated by the end of this week.

If you would like your child to have the opportunity to shop on their own, please consider setting up an E-wallet for them. The E-wallet allows you to safely add money into your child’s account for use at the book fair. They are unable to spend over the amount issued on the E-wallet.

A couple of things to note about e-wallets:

  • New e-wallets have to be set up for each and every book fair

  • Any previous e-wallets that have a balance are automatically put on an e-gift card that can be seen on the left hand side of your login page under ‘My account and funds’ or ‘e-gift cards’

  • There is also an opportunity for others to add money to the E-wallet (perfect for early holiday gifts from grandparents).

Please visit our homepage for more information as well as setting up an e-wallet at: https://www.scholastic.com/bf/swigertinternationalschl1

Access or Donate to Local Food Resources

Due to the ongoing government shutdown, November Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits will not be disbursed, impacting more than 100,000 Denver residents, half of whom are children. Now more than ever, it is critical that we come together to support one another and ensure our children don’t go hungry.

As a reminder, our school meals at DPS will not be impacted. School breakfast and lunches will continue as normal and remain free to families.
