Dear Swigert Families,
As I reflect on the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr, I am inspired by his persistent and unrelenting work to make the world a more just and peaceful place. I wanted to share a lesser known speech he made for middle school students at Barratt Junior High School in Philadelphia on October 26, 1967. He believed strongly that young people are an important part of social change and can make a difference in our world. In the speech, he asked the students about their blueprint, “What is your Life’s Blueprint?” He shared three things he wanted kids to include in their own life blueprint:
Deep belief in your own dignity, worth and your own “somebodiness”
Determination to achieve excellence in their various field of endeavor
Commitment to the eternal principles- beauty, love and justice.

We were so humbled last Friday to host an official Naturalization Ceremony for 20 new citizens from 14 different countries. It was a culminating experience for our third graders as they finished their unit on immigration and understanding different reasons individuals and families immigrate to different countries - both historically and in the present day. Here is a folder with the photos and videos from the special event. Naturalization Ceremony
I wanted to share about an upcoming present for our fourth graders. Swigert fourth graders asked themselves, "What social or environmental issue is most important to me and what can I do to help create positive change?" Students chose a variety of issues, including racial justice, LGBTQ+ rights, gun violence, animal rights and global warming. They crafted a message and created social action posters to share their call to action with the community. The project deepens students' understanding in their IB unit of inquiry: Government impacts the way we live and we can impact our government. As citizens, we have the right and the responsibility to voice our opinions about issues that matter to us. The posters will be on display at the Stanley Marketplace starting on January 23d.
Just a reminder that the choice window opens for Denver Public Schools tomorrow, here is information please see the choice website here - DPS School Choice.
Sincerely,
Shelby Dennis
There are important changes to the ECE application process for the 2025-26 school year.
Those applying for ECE-4 must complete a Universal Preschool Colorado (UPK) application and a DPS SchoolChoice application, however, the school match will come from UPK. This is a change from the last several years when DPS made the matches.
DPS SchoolChoice Round 1 opens at 10 a.m. on Jan. 15 and closes at 4 p.m. on Feb. 18. In order to ensure families can submit their UPK and SchoolChoice applications, we recommend that they submit both by Feb. 3.
Visit upk.colorado.gov to complete a UPK application.
If your student does not have an IEP, make your school selections.
If your student has an IEP, the application will guide you to submit your application without making school selections.
Visit dpsschoolchoice.my.site.com to complete a DPS SchoolChoice application.
Select “Universal Preschool Colorado” as your school selection. Applicants will not make school selections in the DPS SchoolChoice application. DPS will support applicants with an IEP in selecting a school at a later time.
For help, we suggest reaching out to UPK as of now:
Online: Help.UPK.Colorado.Gov
Email: universalpreschool@state.co.us
Phone: 303-866-5223, available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
