Dear Swigert Families,

It was so great to see your children today after spring break. They fill our halls with such joy and excitement; truly the best part of this job. I love welcoming in the students every morning. I hope everyone enjoyed their break and we look forward to the next eight weeks of the school year.

We are seeking two new elected members for our Collaborative School Committee (previously name the School Accountability Committee, SAC) for next year. The CSC provides guidance to the school on their priorities and programming, are represented on calendar and personnel committees and seek ways to improve our school environment. Please see details below and email Shelby if you are interested or have questions.

A few literacy highlights:

All of our ECE-5th grade students participated in March Book Madness bracket and read two to three children's books a week. They all voted for the best books along the way and the overall winner was Don't Trust Fish by Neil Sharpson. Check out the author reading it out loud here.

Also, third grade hosted a student poetry jam right before spring break. Students had a great time sharing their poetry with the grade level and it was quite inspiring. I wanted to share Ronnie's poem from Ms. Colter's class. It is a powerful example of student voice and representation. The picture of her is from the literacy night poetry slam where she also shared! You can watch some of the videos of the slam here.

Sincerely,

Shelby Dennis

Collaborative School Committee

Collaborative School Committee is the new name for the previous School Accountability Committee (SAC).

One way to become involved at Swigert is to join the CSC committee. The monthly meetings are OPEN to everyone to attend and provide information or input on important issues at school.

While the meetings are open, there are some designated elected positions. The CSC is holding elections for two parent representatives for the 2026-2027 school year.

If you are interested, please submit a short blurb (one paragraph) about yourself, including why you think you would be a great addition to our CSC committee to Shelby at Shelby_Dennis@dpsk12.net by Tuesday April 14th. Voting will be held via an online ballot by the Swigert community. Voting will end April 30th.

The SAC is composed of elected representatives, including 2 teachers, five parents, the principal and assistant principal. The commitment for parent representatives is a two year term. Meetings are held approximately once a month in the evenings. Dates for 2026-2027 school year meetings have yet to be determined.

The purpose and scope of the School Accountability Committee CSC is:

  • to provide guidance, evaluation, and approval for the UIP, use of staffing allocations, school budget and school program design
  • to enhance student achievement and school climate by engaging the school community in collaborative efforts supporting the school and district’s goals
  • to provide strategic direction in support of the school’s mission and vision as stated in the Unified Improvement Plan (UIP). The UIP, with the school’s program design, serves as the strategic plan for the school.
