Dear Swigert Families,

As the spring calendar get more and more full, we encourage you to read through the Eagle Post each week! So many fun things are packed into these next few months.

Fieldwork is an important part of our IB program at Swigert. We provide meaningful and connected experiences that directly relate to what the students are learning in the classroom. Yesterday was a great example of that as the third graders visited the Cleo Parker Robinson Theater and Five Points. Here's a recap from the 3rd grade team:

"On Tuesday, 3rd grade students visited the Cleo Parker Robinson Center for Healing Arts and toured the historic Five Points neighborhood in Denver. This field trip aligns with 3rd Grade's "How We Express Ourselves" unit, where students learn about the central idea: "Creative expression reflects the human experience." As part of this unit, students learn about the roots of the Great Migration and how it helped spark the cultural movement known as the Harlem Renaissance. To deepen their understanding, students visited Denver’s historic Five Points neighborhood—once known as the “Harlem of the West.” During the excursion, they toured the new facility for Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Center for the Healing Arts and learned about the role of dance in the Harlem Renaissance. Students participate in two dance classes such as jazz, swing, and Afro-Brazilian.

Afterwards students completed a scavenger hunt in the Five Points neighborhood. They selected a mural from Welton Street Renaissance Project created by Black artists from the community to reflect on. Students also passed by Denver Fire Station 3 and read information about the station’s role in serving the neighborhood as the oldest fire station in Denver. Next they looked at displays featuring Black leaders and discussed how these individuals showed leadership and positively impacted their community. Finally, students observed the neighborhood’s well-known Five Points intersection and created drawings of what they saw. Through these activities, students practiced observation, reflection, and connection-making as they explored the neighborhood’s history and culture.

Throughout the "How We Express Ourselves" unit, students will continue learning about various artists of the Harlem Renaissance and how they use their art to reflect the Black experience. This unit is one of 3rd grade's arts integration units and students will create art in the likeness of Romare Bearden. Finally students continue to explore expressing their own ideas through visual arts, poetry, and opinion writing."

We love seeing units come to life with real world experiences. As always, please reach out with any questions!

Sincerely,

Shelby Dennis

From the Nurse: DPS Health Screenings

Denver Public Schools provides free vision, hearing, and dental screenings for all students in identified grades (Early Childhood Education, Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 9th).

The screenings are NOT an assessment or an evaluation and do NOT replace professional exams. Mass screening is considered best practice to identify students who may be at risk for health concerns affecting the student’s ability to learn, and who may need extra support to reach academic benchmarks.

Your student will receive screenings in the following areas:

Vision, Hearing, and Dental. Resources are available for DPS enrolled students.

You must notify your school nurse directly should you wish to REFUSE/OPT OUT of any of the free screenings for your student.

The health screening components of vision and hearing will be completed at your child’s school on:

Dates: April 30th & May 4th - 6th

Please contact your school nurse for any questions or concerns about the health screenings. Parents/guardians of students who were absent or who did not have optimal hearing, vision or dental screening results will be notified in writing regarding the results.

Thank you for your assistance as we work together to educate and support your students!

Sincerely,

School Nurse: Hoang Tran
