Dear Swigert Families,
An important part of our school programming is focusing on developing the whole child. I wanted to share about our social emotional programming and support at Swigert. Some of our Tier 1/universal practices include morning meeting to build and sustain a sense of classroom community, restorative justice practices (4-part apology, age appropriate conflict resolution practices), implementing Second Steps lessons as needed, and utilizing the Zones of Regulation curriculum in every classroom.
The Zones of Regulation help students understand their feelings and use tools to support emotional regulation. You might hear your kids saying they are in the “Blue Zone” or the “Red Zone” and wondering what that means. This is all part of the Zones of Regulation curriculum which helps students identify how they are feeling and what tools/strategies they might need for emotional regulation. Every classroom incorporates various ways for students to check in with these zones and includes a ‘regulation station’ (aka calm down space) if a student needs to take some time to implement tools and strategies to help them with their own emotional regulation throughout the day.
Additionally, students at each grade level will receive whole class lessons that focus on how the body understands emotions and the brain science between emotions and emotional regulation. These lessons have been adopted from the MindUP social-emotional curriculum and tailored to each grade level. You can learn more about our current programing - here. You will find ideas and ways for you to support some of the practices at home- strengthening that important connection of school and home.
Sincerely,
Shelby Dennis

After school enrichments begin next week, Monday September 8th.
For the last decade, our past school secretary Daphne has taken on the role of designing and producing the yearbook for our school. With her recent move, I am looking for a few parents volunteers to come alongside 3 staff members to help make this huge task throughout this year. You would be responsible for helping with assigned page layouts, mostly things that can be done from home on a computer. If you'd be interested in helping me out, please reach out to Emily_Pool@dpsk12.net.
You take great photos every day! We’d love to gather those photos from you this year. Have pictures from the first day walk to school? Halloween party? Field trip you chaperoned? Please drop them into this google drive or email them to Emily Pool (emily_pool@dpsk12.net) and we’ll possibly use them in the yearbook this year!
Join us for a community coffee! Bring any of your questions that you have around school, safety, systems, etc. Our admin team will be there to chat and answer anything!
Friday, September 12th right after drop off, in the library.
Coffee from Einstein’s will be provided.
If you need translation services for this event, please reach out to Megan Tate at mdonald@dpsk12.net.
What is the BESS ?
In Denver Public Schools, we use the Behavioral and Emotional Screening System (BESS) to screen all students for behavioral and social emotional risk.
It is a short questionnaire completed by students (3rd-12th), teachers, and parents
Why the BESS ?
Proactive and systematic way to determine appropriate supports for students and meet student needs
Screening data is used to provide students with access to appropriate social emotional/mental health interventions
Addressing the behavioral and social emotional needs of our students is critical to ensuring their well-being and healthy development, their access to safe and welcoming schools, and their ability to engage with grade level texts and tasks.
DIRECTIONS:
1. Scan or click the QR code below or follow this link: tinyurl.com/bessparent
2. Enter your student’s DPS ID and date of birth (MM/DD/YYYY).
3. Complete the screening form.
To learn more, view our Frequently Asked Questions at tinyurl.com/bessoverview.

Safety is our priority at Denver Public Schools. Because of this, Denver Public Schools has introduced an app for parents/guardians to get live and up to date information for their students transportation. Hit the My Ride button below to start the process.
DPS is rolling out their app which will be a way to see communication in one spot from DPS and every school you may have students at. Our building and staff has not been trained in this software yet, so you can download the Denver Public Schools app (from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store) but it will be a bit before you see Swigert as an option. It will be a slow roll out later this year and we'll keep you updated!
Sign up now for our first meeting in September!
