Community Safety Alert After-Hours Activity on School Playground |
We want to make our community aware of a recent safety concern at Slavens. After school hours and on weekends, we have had several incidents of vandalism on the playground. In some cases, individuals believed to be middle school–aged youth or younger high school students were captured on school security cameras lighting pieces of wood on fire on the playground.
This behavior creates a serious safety risk to our school grounds, neighboring properties, and community members. We are asking for your partnership in helping us keep our campus safe. If you see suspicious activity, vandalism, or unsafe behavior on school property, please report it immediately. You can contact: Denver Public Schools Safety and Security at 720-423-3911
Denver Police non-emergency line at 720-913-2000 Thank you for helping us protect our school and community. |

📢 Parent Volunteer Opportunity📢 Collaborative School Committee (CSC) |
Slavens is seeking two parent volunteers to serve a two-year term on the school’s Collaborative School Committee (CSC).
The CSC is an advisory group of parents, staff, and community members who work together to support student achievement and school improvement. The committee provides input on key priorities such as the school budget, the Unified Improvement Plan (UIP), and strategies to strengthen our school community. The CSC does not participate in day-to-day school operations or address individual student or personnel matters. If more than one parent expresses interest, information will be shared with the parent community about the process to vote for a parent representative.
Parents interested in being considered should email darcie_forde@dpsk12.net by Friday, March 27. All CSC meetings are open to the public, and all parents are welcome to attend. |

DIO Community Book Study: The Gift of Failure by Jessica Lahey
Join the Slavens community for an engaging evening of conversation around raising capable, resilient kids. In The Gift of Failure, educator and parent Jessica Lahey explores how giving children appropriate independence - and allowing them to learn from mistakes - can help them develop motivation, confidence, and problem-solving skills that last far beyond the classroom.
Together with an outside facilitator from Integrated Behavioral health, we’ll reflect on key ideas from the book and discuss practical ways caregivers and educators can support independence, responsibility, and resilience in kids of all ages.
This will be a thoughtful but informal discussion, focused on sharing insights, asking questions, and learning from one another as a community.
You don’t need to be an expert on the book to participate. Just come ready to listen, reflect, and connect with other caregivers and educators (we’d love to have our Slavens staff join!) Date: Thursday, April 30
Time: 5:30–7:00 PM Location: Slavens Library
RSVP not required, but encouraged for planning purposes. A limited number of books are available in the office, first come, first served!
