A Note from Administration

Please be on the lookout for a message from the Slavens administration coming to you tomorrow through Thrillshare. This midyear note will reflect on highlights and growth from the first half of the school year and share what we’re looking forward to as we head into the second half.

We’re proud of all that our students and staff have accomplished so far and are excited about what’s ahead. Thank you for your continued partnership and support.

Important: 2026 CMAS Testing Schedule & Information

Our students will take the Colorado Measures of Academic Success (CMAS) this April. These end-of-year assessments measure how well our students are mastering Colorado Academic Standards and ensure we are meeting our goals to prepare them for college and career success. The CMAS Testing Window is April 6-24, opening the day students return from Spring Break.

Testing Schedule and Expectations

Review our schedule (below) to see exactly when your student(s) will be testing. The testing will be completed first thing in the morning, with any make up tests in the afternoon. To support your child and minimize missed instruction from makeup testing, please:

Ensure your child arrives at school on time.

Avoid scheduling appointments or vacations on your student’s designated testing days.

The Role of State Assessments

CMAS data is a critical tool for determining if students are on track for future success. For more details on why these assessments matter, visit the DPS CMAS Website.

Parent Excusals/Opt Outs

While student participation is highly encouraged, parents may choose to excuse their child. To allow our staff time to plan, please complete any excusals via the DPS Parent Portal by March 13. Instructions are available at the bottom of the DPS CMAS Website.

Student Preparation & Family Resources

The Colorado Department of Education (CDE) offers resources to help students and families prepare:

Diversity, Inclusion, Outreach (DIO) Speaker

The Diversity, Inclusion, and Outreach (DIO) PTA subcommittee is excited to host distinguished speaker, Brandon Slade with Untapped Learning: https://untappedlearning.com/.

Brandon helps students develop the skills and confidence to succeed in and beyond school. Drawing from years of experience working with students who learn differently, Brandon specializes in practical, compassionate strategies that build structure, resilience, and independence.

When students struggle with executive function skills like organization, time management, and planning, they're more likely to have late or missing assignments and procrastinate on long-term projects. They may seem unmotivated, constantly frustrated, or paralyzed by perfectionism that keeps them from starting or finishing work. These students are often mislabeled as lazy or disinterested, but executive function skills don't occur naturally. They're learned. Teaching these skills helps students succeed not just academically but in all areas of their lives through repetition, routine, self-advocacy, and staying active - join us to discuss these strategies.

Illness Prevention Information and Resources to Keep Our Community Healthy

As we return to the classroom this week, it’s important for our community to know that respiratory illnesses are widespread in Colorado, including influenza (flu).

Flu, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and COVID-19 illnesses are caused by viruses. Symptoms often include fever or feeling feverish, coughing, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, and muscle or body aches. People who get one of these viral respiratory illnesses mostly have respiratory symptoms (i.e., coughing, sore throat). If you think a child has the flu, RSV, or COVID-19, they should stay home until they've been fever-free for at least 24 hours and their symptoms are improving. The Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment (CDPHE) has guidance to help families decide when to keep children home from school.

The flu usually causes mild to moderate symptoms that can be treated at home with rest, hydration, and over-the-counter medications for pain and fever as needed. However, young children, older adults, and people with underlying medical conditions are at increased risk for severe illness and complications.

How to protect yourself and those around you:

-Stay up to date on vaccines (including your yearly flu shot). It’s not too late to get a flu shot to offer extra protection during this tough flu season.

-Wash your hands often.

-Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

You can find providers who carry flu vaccines online.

Denver Public Schools coordinates closely with the Denver Department of Public Health & Environment (DDPHE) to monitor illnesses.

For resources and information about circulation of flu, RSV, and COVID-19 in Colorado throughout the 2025-26 season, check out CDPHE’s Viral Respiratory Diseases Dashboard or DDPHE’s Respiratory Illness webpage.

Illness Related Absences

We love to see our students at school each day but we also know that absences due to illness can and do happen, especially during this time of year. If children become ill and cannot attend school, guardians should contact the school to notify them that the absence is due to illness. Without this notification, schools are not able to excuse the absence. Note: A school may require documentation after a student has exceeded 10 absences due to illness or injury.

Although both excused and unexcused absences are considered when determining if a student is chronically absent, excused absences do not count towards truancy filings. The fewer unexcused absences a student has, the less likely the student will be considered for a truancy court referral.

If there are barriers, illness related or not, that make it difficult for children to attend school consistently, families are encouraged to contact the school for support.
