Important Health Advisory Regarding Substance Use
The Denver Department of Public Health & Environment has reported an increase in nonfatal overdoses in our community over the past week. In addition, the Office of the Medical Examiner is investigating numerous fatalities that are suspected to be overdoses, though these cases are pending toxicological screening.
Although fentanyl use is rare among DPS students, it is crucial to engage in conversations with your child about the dangers of taking any medication that has not been prescribed to them or using any powdered substances. These substances may be laced with fentanyl, which can be extremely dangerous. Even a very small amount of fentanyl can be fatal.
We encourage you to talk openly with your child about these risks to ensure their safety. For additional information about the dangers of fentanyl, read these tips on how to keep your children safe.
If you are concerned about your child’s substance use, this document provides information about substance use treatment providers for Denver youth. You are also encouraged to reach out to your school's mental health team for support.

EDUCA DPS Podcast: BESS Survey
In this EDUCA DPS podcast, we dive into the Behavioral and Emotional Screening System (BESS) with Megan Miccio, a school social worker from Thomas Jefferson High School, and Perla Murillo, a school social worker at Montbello Middle School. This universal screening tool, which is implemented twice a year in all DPS-managed schools, helps identify students’ behavioral and emotional strengths and areas where additional support may be needed.
Megan and Perla share how BESS data guides interventions, fosters meaningful connections and supports our Shared Core Value of Students First. They also discuss the vital roles families play in the screening process.

RASA Phase 2 is Underway Thanks to the Support of Denver Voters
Phase 2 of the Responsive Arts & STEAM Academy (RASA) construction project is underway. The 2024 Bond provided additional funding to build a new wing for a middle school, paving the road for any RASA student who wishes to continue their educational journey through eighth grade.
The new Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) focused elementary school opened its doors last fall thanks to the Denver voters who passed the 2020 Bond! The Far Northeast region of Denver is growing rapidly, and DPS is committed to responding to the needs of our young learners and their families.
