Climate and Safety Spotlight: Keeping Our Kids Safe - Gun Violence Facts and Safe Storage

Keeping students safe is our highest priority at DPS. This month’s Climate and Safety Spotlight is focused on preventing gun violence and how we can work together as a community to keep children safe at home, at school and in our neighborhoods.

The Reality: Why This Matters

Across the United States:

  • Every day, about 12 children die from gun violence, and many more are injured.
  • For children and teens (ages one–17), firearms are now the leading cause of death.
  • Since the 1999 Columbine shooting, hundreds of thousands of students nationwide have experienced gun violence at school.

Behind every number is a child with hopes, dreams and people who love them. That’s why prevention and partnership with families is so important.

The Role of Safe Gun Storage

Research shows that many guns used in youth suicides, school shootings or unintentional shootings come from the child’s home or the home of a friend or relative.

Sandy Hook Promise highlights that:

  • An estimated 4.6 million children live in homes where at least one gun is kept loaded and unlocked.
  • Nearly half of parents with a gun in the home believe their child doesn’t know where it is stored — often, children do know.

Safe storage saves lives.

If there are firearms in any home where your child spends time (your own home, relatives or friends):

  • Store guns unloaded.
  • Lock firearms in a secured safe, lockbox or with a gun lock.
  • Store ammunition locked and separate from firearms.
  • Make sure children and teens cannot access the keys or combinations.

Recognizing Warning Signs

Many incidents of violence are preceded by warning signs, especially on social media or in conversations. These can include:

  • Talking about or posting about wanting to hurt themselves or others.
  • Sharing pictures with weapons in a threatening or concerning way.
  • Extreme anger, bullying or threats toward others.
  • Withdrawal from friends, activities or changes in mood and behavior.

If you notice any of these warning signs in your child — or in another young person — take it seriously.

How Families Can Help

Here are practical ways you can support safety and prevention at home:

1. Talk with your child about speaking up.
Let them know they should always tell a trusted adult if they:

  • See a weapon or hear about a plan to bring one to school.
  • See posts online about violence or self-harm.
  • Are worried about a friend who seems depressed, angry or withdrawn.

2. Ask about safety when your child visits other homes.
It’s okay to ask other parents or relatives:

“If there are any firearms in your home? Are they locked, unloaded and stored safely?”

3. Stay connected.

  • Check in with your child regularly about how they’re feeling and what they’re seeing online.
  • Know their friends, favorite apps and games.
  • Help them identify trusted adults at school and at home.

4. Use school and community resources.
If you’re worried about your child’s emotional or mental health, reach out to:

  • Your school’s counselor, social worker, or mental health team.
  • Your pediatrician or health provider.
  • Community mental health resources.

Our Shared Commitment

DPS is committed to:

  • Training staff to recognize warning signs and respond quickly.
  • Partnering with families on prevention, not just reaction.
  • Promoting safe storage and access to gun locks.
  • Creating school environments where students feel seen, supported and safe.

Thank you for being our partners in keeping students safe. Together, we can prevent tragedies and ensure every child in Denver Public Schools has the chance to grow, learn and thrive.

If you have any questions or would like more information about gun locks or safety resources, contact Joey Trujillo.
