Hello Nighthawks,

As we step into Teacher Appreciation Week, I want to pause and highlight the quiet, powerful work our teachers do each and every day. While we often see their commitment in the classroom, so much of their impact happens beyond what’s visible.

Our teachers are mentors, motivators, and builders of confidence. They create meaningful connections with students, foster curiosity, and encourage them to take risks, think deeply, and lead with heart. They model what it means to care—for learning, for one another, and for our greater community.

Whether it's staying late to support a club, coaching on the field, providing a listening ear, or finding creative ways to engage students, Northfield teachers show up in ways big and small that shape who our students become.

The sense of belonging we work so hard to create at Northfield is only possible because of the people who fill our classrooms with purpose and passion.

Let’s make sure they feel the appreciation they deserve. Please take a moment this week to send a note of thanks to a teacher who has made a difference—email addresses can be found in our Northfield Staff Directory.

It’s always a great day to be a Nighthawk—and our teachers are a big reason why.

Northfield senior Natalia H. recently took part in the Academic Mentor Program through Community Resource Inc., where she was paired with Heather Polk, a pediatric nurse. This unique experience gave Natalia a hands-on look into the world of pediatric healthcare—far beyond what a classroom can offer.

The program connects passionate, high-achieving students with professionals in their field of interest for a series of mentorship sessions, ending with a student-led presentation. We’re proud of Natalia for taking this exciting step toward her future!

This year, 247 Northfield juniors and seniors earned the DPS Seal of Biliteracy — a nationally recognized award that celebrates college-level proficiency in multiple languages. The seal is free, appears on transcripts, and helps students stand out to colleges and employers.

Juniors will receive the seal on their diplomas next year — congratulations to all our multilingual scholars! 🎓👏

Northfield’s DECA chapter sent 23 students to this week’s International Career Development Conference (ICDC)—a massive event that brought together over 23,000 high school competitors from across the country.

Our students competed in a variety of business-focused events, from marketing and finance to entrepreneurship, hospitality, and sports entertainment.

👏 Big shoutout to freshman Owen H., who made it to the final round in personal finance, placing in the top 20 nationwide—a first for any Northfield freshman!

While ICDC is fiercely competitive, just qualifying is a huge accomplishment. Sophomore Will Zhang summed it up best: “I’m just so grateful to be here!”

We’re incredibly proud of this year’s team and can’t wait to see what next year brings!

The Visual Arts Department at Northfield High School is thrilled to celebrate the achievements of four exceptional students—Henry G, Hunter T, Andrew K, and Kendall S—for being honored by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) with crystal pillar awards as part of the prestigious Student Production Awards.

These awards, submitted through the Heartland Chapter—which includes Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, and Oklahoma—recognize outstanding work in student media and are part of a highly competitive regional competition.

Among the honored projects are The Hollow Watch and the award-winning Instagram series Keeping Up with Kendall. The Hollow Watch is a powerful student-produced film that captures suspense and emotion through cinematic storytelling, while Keeping Up with Kendall is a creative, student-led visual arts series that uses humor and insight to connect our department with the broader school community.

We are so proud of your talent, creativity, and dedication. Keep telling your stories!

Real-World Readiness: IB Art Students Connect with Creative Futures

white collage

This week, both our junior and senior IB Visual Arts students engaged in a powerful learning experience with a guest speaker from the Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design (RMCAD). The presentation centered on professionalism in the arts, offering real-world insight into developing a portfolio, preparing for creative careers, and confidently articulating one’s artistic voice.

This experience directly supports key aspects of the IB Visual Arts curriculum, including the development of personal voice, reflective thinking, and preparing students for their Comparative Study, Process Portfolio, and Exhibition.

By connecting their IB coursework to life after high school, students gained valuable tools and perspective on how to navigate their future in the arts with professionalism and purpose.

✈️ Shoutout to Jack – Northfield’s Newest Licensed Pilot!

Jack standing in front of propellor plane

Huge congratulations to Jack, who recently passed his FAA flight test and is now a licensed pilot! 🎉 Earning a private pilot’s license includes at least 40 hours of flight time (or however long it takes for the student pilot to master the skills), ground instruction, and serious dedication. Passing the FAA test means Jack has proven his skills in both flight maneuvers and aviation knowledge — an incredible accomplishment!

Way to soar, Jack! 🛩️👏
