Brad Kizer

Happy Friday, Nighthawk Families!

My name is Brad Kizer, and I am an Assistant Principal and the CTE Pathway Director at Northfield High School. Though it’s my first year as a Nighthawk, I have already grown to love the staff and community—especially the students. We’ve got something special here, and I look forward to serving this amazing school for years to come!

A Few Updates from the CTE World:

  • Business Pathway: Students in our Business pathway recently competed at the DECA State Championships, where 23 Northfield students took home awards, including one State Champion—congratulations to Maile McManis! 🏆 Additionally, two students earned alternate spots. Many of these students have chosen to compete at the DECA International Career Development Conference in Orlando this April!

    • Huge shoutout to Joey Bender and Ellie Sprague for co-sponsoring the group, as well as Elizabeth Martin, Mike Rockwood, Henry Szuster, and Tarah Buckner for chaperoning at the state competition!

  • Biomedical Pathway: Students in our Biomedical pathway recently competed at the HOSA State Leadership Conference, where 26 Northfield students placed in the Top 10 for their events. Five of those students placed in the Top 3 and are now eligible to compete at Nationals this June in Nashville!

    • Special thanks to Angela Cannava and Abby Cox for co-sponsoring the group, and to Jeff Brown and Colin Welsh for chaperoning the event!

  • Computer Science and Engineering Pathways: Students in our Computer Science and Engineering pathways have launched a new Robotics team here at Northfield! They are currently finishing up the construction and programming of their first robot in preparation for their first competition at the end of the month.

    • A big shoutout to Anna Noble for sponsoring the club and supporting this team. Good luck, everyone! 🚀🤖

  • Exciting News – Digital Media Pathway: Northfield is currently exploring the launch of a new CTE pathway for Digital Media in the 2026-27 school year! Unfortunately, the application and approval process takes up to six months, so we won’t be able to offer it next year. However, stay tuned for more updates!

Wishing everyone a safe and relaxing weekend!

Guidance for Respiratory Illnesses

DPS Nursing and Student Health Services reminds all families of the following guidance for respiratory illnesses.

How are viruses spread?
Respiratory viruses are primarily spread through contact with droplets from the nose and throat of an infected person, typically via coughing and sneezing. These viruses can also spread when someone touches a surface that has the virus on it, as they can survive on hard surfaces for several hours and on skin for a shorter period. Frequent hand washing is crucial in reducing the spread.

General Health Practices:

  • Hand Hygiene: Wash hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

  • Cough/Sneeze Etiquette: Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or your sleeve when coughing or sneezing. Dispose of tissues in the trash immediately.

  • Surface Cleaning: Regularly clean and disinfect high-touch areas such as doorknobs, mobile devices, countertops, and tables.

  • Avoid Close Contact: Refrain from close interactions, including kissing, sharing eating utensils, or shaking hands with individuals showing cold-like symptoms.

  • Flu Vaccination: Get your flu vaccine to help reduce the spread of illness.

By following these practices, we can help reduce the transmission of respiratory illnesses in our schools and protect the health of everyone in our community.

Updated Covid-19 Guidelines

In March 2024, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated its respiratory virus guidance for people with COVID-19. The updates align with guidance for other respirator viruses, including the flu and RSV. Review the complete guidelines.
