A Note from the Nest...

Bonnie Martin

Happy Friday, Nighthawk Families!

As we approach the final stretch of the school year, I want to take a moment to encourage our seniors to stay focused and committed to their academic and extracurricular responsibilities. This is an exciting time filled with celebrations, but it’s also crucial to continue putting in the effort to finish strong.

A few important reminders:

  • Academics Matter – Colleges and future employers still review final transcripts, so maintain your dedication to your coursework.

  • Attendance Counts – Being present and engaged in class is essential to staying on track for graduation.

  • Graduation Requirements – If you have any outstanding credits or requirements, check in with your counselor to ensure you're on track.

  • Pay Your Fees – Any outstanding school fees must be paid before graduation. Please check with the office to make sure your MySchoolBucks account is at a zero balance.

  • Exciting Events Ahead! – There’s so much to look forward to, including Prom, Senior Week, and Graduation! Be sure to stay informed about dates, deadlines, and expectations so you don’t miss out.

Your hard work and leadership set an example for younger students, and we are incredibly proud of all you’ve accomplished. Let’s make these last months meaningful, productive, and filled with positive memories!

If you have any questions or need support, don’t hesitate to reach out.

Go Nighthawks!

Best,

Dr. Bonnie Martin

End-of-Course Dates and Final Exams

As we approach the IB exam period and the end of the school year, we want to clarify expectations regarding class schedules and final exams. Historically, there has been some confusion about course end dates, and it is important that we are clear and consistent to ensure equity in learning opportunities and the safety and supervision of all students.

Please note that classes will continue for non-Senior IB courses as scheduled through the end of the school year, even as IB exams take place. Students are expected to attend all classes and actively participate in learning activities until their designated course end date.

For clarification:

  • IB Diploma Seniors will be finished with all coursework after May 2.

  • All other seniors who are not taking the IB exam for a particular course are required to attend class through May 12 and take a final exam on May 13-14.

  • All other grades will attend class through May 23rd and take final exams during the week of May 27. There are a few exceptions to this in some mixed grade-level IB classes that are outlined in more detail on the table below.

Please review this table for the IB testing schedule and specific course information and end dates to ensure that you and your student know attendance expectations and finals dates for each of their classes.

We appreciate your cooperation in ensuring a smooth and structured end to the school year. If you have any questions, please reach out to Reina Cruz (IB-related questions) or Bonnie Martin (non-IB related questions).

Community Forum with Michelle Quattlebaum at McAuliffe International

We are excited to share that Director Michelle Quattlebaum will be hosting a Community Engagement Event at McAuliffe International School on March 19 from 6:00-8:00 pm. At Large Directors Scott Esseman and John Youngquist will also be in attendance. This is a wonderful opportunity for families, staff, and community members of District 4 to connect, ask questions, and engage in meaningful discussions about our district. Some topics they will be discussing are enrollment boundaries and zones, board policy work, and safe and welcoming schools.

Please help us spread the word by sharing this information with your families and encouraging their participation. Attached is a flyer you can distribute via email, newsletters, and social media.

Thank you for your support in making this a successful and engaging event for our school community. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out.

Prom Dress Opportunity

Prom dress event

Hello,

My name is Hannah Maldonado Villar. I currently teach here in DPS and am also part of a non-profit in Adams County called The Prom Dress Exchange.  Our mission is to make prom more accessible for young women in high school. The average cost of attending prom is around $900, so we want to ensure the young women in our community are able to access prom with an affordable option for prom dresses.

We will be hosting our annual event on March 22, 2025. Please share this flier with your students, staff and communities. We have continuously seen students from DPS attend our event the past few years and are excited to continue to share this opportunity for our students! We appreciate your support!

If you have any questions, please reach out. We look forward to hosting your students soon!

Best,

Hannah Maldonado

Opting out of School Directory

Families have the option to opt out of the school directory. To do so, you can either visit our main office in person or have your student stop by to request a form to bring home. Once the form is completed, please return it to the main office to ensure the change is processed.

Please note that under FERPA, directory information is considered an exception, meaning government agencies may request this information.

You can find more information in the Family Resource Toolkit.

Student Travel

It’s time to learn about the exciting travel opportunities happening in 2026!  If you’re new to Northfield, or missed the memo this past fall, allow me to fill you in. . .

Our student travel program provides opportunities for our Nighthawks to visit locations across the United States, and around the world.  Twice a year we share detailed information with all interested families about the trips we’re planning, the companies running them, and how every Northfield student can take advantage of the opportunity!

Because we use more than one student travel company, and our program is growing, we’ve expanded this event into a 2-day Showcase.  Students will begin hearing about these opportunities in their classes this week, over student announcements next week, and you’ll receive emails about how to attend.

Be on the lookout beginning Monday, March 10, for information regarding this two day event.  The information that will be shared on each day of the showcase is NOT a duplicate, but is based on the company(ies) running the trip.  Be sure to read the emails carefully and register accordingly; you only need to register once per Showcase day, even though you’ll receive a couple of emails with information for both days.  Mark your calendars now for March 18 (virtually) and March 19, in-person, and plan to attend.

We look forward to seeing you during the Spring Travel Week, and we hope to take your Nighthawk with us on the adventure of a lifetime!

Sincerely,

Brian Jenkins, Coordinator

Note from the Nurse : Measles Outbreak

With the current measles outbreak happening in our country and nearby states, it is more important than ever to make sure your child is fully vaccinated against this dangerous and extremely contagious disease. As spring break approaches and people travel, the risk of exposure is very likely. The best way to protect your child is with a vaccine. Here is a list of free clinics ready to serve you. Please reach out to our nurse kate_marshall@dpsk12.net with any questions or if you are unsure of your student’s vaccination status.

Guidance for Respiratory Illnesses

DPS Nursing and Student Health Services reminds all families of the following guidance for respiratory illnesses.

How are viruses spread?
Respiratory viruses are primarily spread through contact with droplets from the nose and throat of an infected person, typically via coughing and sneezing. These viruses can also spread when someone touches a surface that has the virus on it, as they can survive on hard surfaces for several hours and on skin for a shorter period. Frequent hand washing is crucial in reducing the spread.

General Health Practices:

  • Hand Hygiene: Wash hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

  • Cough/Sneeze Etiquette: Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or your sleeve when coughing or sneezing. Dispose of tissues in the trash immediately.

  • Surface Cleaning: Regularly clean and disinfect high-touch areas such as doorknobs, mobile devices, countertops, and tables.

  • Avoid Close Contact: Refrain from close interactions, including kissing, sharing eating utensils, or shaking hands with individuals showing cold-like symptoms.

  • Flu Vaccination: Get your flu vaccine to help reduce the spread of illness.

By following these practices, we can help reduce the transmission of respiratory illnesses in our schools and protect the health of everyone in our community.

Updated Covid-19 Guidelines

In March 2024, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated its respiratory virus guidance for people with COVID-19. The updates align with guidance for other respirator viruses, including the flu and RSV. Review the complete guidelines.
