Ms. Calarri Cox, Northfield Assistant Principal

Welcome back to a snowy start of second semester. I am Calarri Cox, Northfield assistant principal who oversees instruction and scheduling; plus, students with alpha last names "Ho"-"Men" in grades 10-12. I hope that each of you is well rested and ready for the weeks and months ahead of us. There is a lot to look forward to, with a fresh start in classes and course selection in February for the 25/26 school year.

Currently, we are working to finalize our 25/26 course offerings. Once finished, current Nighthawks will make selections according to DPS graduation requirements. As in years past, we are deeply committed to offering a wide range of courses to allow students to pursue their passions and to prepare them for their post-secondary life.

Other exciting events this semester include a freshmen/sophomore dance, pep rallies, music and performing arts showcases, Wish Week, junior/senior prom, Senior Week, and of course, the celebration of the Northfield High School Class of 2025 on Friday, May 30. Follow along with us as we continue a school year filled with academic growth and success, Nighthawk pride and so much more!

School Policies Reinforced: Student IDs, Parking, Cell Phones

As we begin the second semester, please remind your student(s) of the following Northfield High School policies.

Student IDs: Student IDs must be worn at all times while on campus according to district policy. Replacement IDs are available in the Main Office in Building 5 for $5 each and is payable via MySchoolBucks. All Nighthawks must provide their own school-appropriate lanyard to display their student ID.

Parking: The north parking lot closest to Buildings 1 and 3 is reserved for seniors with a valid SENIOR parking permit. The lot closest to Northfield Athletic Complex is open to all students and staff, as well as the public. Students may not park in any reserved spots or in the faculty/staff lot on the southeast side of campus. Members of Northfield’s Engagement Team, Campus Safety Officers and DSST will monitor the parking lots in the morning and for the first 15 minutes following lunch. All student-drivers are asked to sign up for a Paul Sandoval Campus parking permit, regardless of if they park on campus or on surrounding neighborhood streets. Following signup, permits can be collected from Ms. Slater; Ms. Slater’s office is located in Building 5 at the far end of the Main Office. Students must obey all street signs, as well as refrain from blocking alleys, driveways or fire hydrants; these parking violations are strongly enforced by the Denver Police Department. Students are not allowed to park in the Shops at Beeler parking lot. Parking violations on and off campus may result in towing of a vehicle. Northfield High School is not responsible for towing or ticketing.

Transportation: Families who drive their student(s) to school are encouraged to allow extra time and to consider dropping off/picking up on Dallas St. east of the athletic fields. Please pay close attention to speed limits, street signs and pedestrians around campus. Parking is NOT permitted within the bus lane on Central Park Blvd. Bicycles and skateboards must be locked on the racks located on the east side near the main entrance of Buildings 2 and 5. Bikes are not to be locked around trees or fences and may be cut off and removed if done so. Students may not ride bikes or skateboards on school property. The school is not responsible for theft or damage to bicycles or skateboards.

Cell Phones: Cell phones are not allowed in classrooms at any time. This includes the use of AirPods and/or other headphones, etc. Some exceptions are permitted. Students can expect to check devices in when entering classrooms or keep devices in their backpacks. Students are asked to save cell phone use for during passing periods and lunch.

financial aid workshop

Financial Aid Workshop. It's time to apply for financial aid by filling out the FAFSA or CASFA application. Sign up to attend the Financial Aid Workshop on Tuesday, Jan. 28, 3–7 p.m., in Building 5 Room 119. Northfield's Denver Scholarship Foundation advisers will help attendees to complete the application and discuss next steps. Applications look different this year than in previous years, so even if you have completed it in the past you may benefit from the workshop. Again, it is very important that this application is completed promptly and correctly.

You can prepare for the workshop by creating a login! For students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents, the FAFSA is the application needed to apply for financial aid. Students who are undocumented must complete the CASFA application.

For students completing the FAFSA, families need to create a StudentAid.gov account, which consists of a username and password. This was previously known as an FSA ID, so if you already have one you do not need to create another. Every family and student needs an account and it must be created at least three days prior to starting the FAFSA application. Families completing CASFA, can create a student login.

Please contact DSF Future Center Advisor, Mr. Zack Montez, if you have further questions.

Access Testing for Multi-Language Learners

Beginning Monday, Jan. 13, Multilingual Learners (MLLs) in grades 9-12 will participate in ACCESS testing. This assessment measures a student’s English language skills in the areas of speaking, listening, reading and writing. ACCESS is used by classroom teachers to determine the level of language support a student may need during instruction. With this information, Northfield is able to monitor student progress on an annual basis and determine placement and supports.

IB Psychology Internal Assessments
This month, seniors enrolled in IB Psychology HL 2 will begin the process of designing, carrying out a psychological experiment and producing a related scholarly report. Students have prepared for this assignment throughout the IB Psychology course and is the Internal Assessment (IA) for IB Psychology.

An IA is a part of all IB courses and contribute 25-30% to the overall 1-7 score students earn for a given IB exam. Past IA topics have included whether taking notes by hand versus on a computer leads to better performance on cognitive tasks, or if the overall physical attractiveness of a defendant will impact the length of time they are sentenced for their crime. To do their best, students should be clear, focused and concise in their scientific writing, and have a strong analysis of their overall strengths and weaknesses when designing their chosen experiment.
