Mr. Nick Kresse-Bond Northfield Counselor

Hello Nighthawks!

My name is Nicholas Kresse-Bond, and I’m the department chair for the Northfield High School Counseling team. I’m excited to share details about the upcoming Choice of Studies (COS) process kicking off next week.

Who: Current Northfield students in grades 9-11.
When: Tuesday, Feb. 18, through Friday, Feb. 28, at 3:30 p.m.
What: Choice of Studies for the 25/26 School Year.
How: Students complete and submit COS via Google Form located on the “2025-26 Choice of Studies” tab on the Northfield website. The COS tab will go live on Monday, Feb. 17. The COS Google Form is accessible via a student's DPS Google account only.

Northfield counselors have developed several supports for students and families to help make this process as easy as possible. On the COS webpage, we will include pick sheets outlining grade-level offerings. We will also publish our 25/26 Course Catalog that includes a plethora of detailed course information, as well as instructional videos for students and families to reference in the event students miss counselor presentations given in English classes on Tuesday, Feb. 18, and Wednesday, Feb. 19.

In addition to the online materials, Northfield counselors will offer walk-in support for students during lunch each day in the library starting on Thursday, Feb. 20, and through the last day of COS on Friday, Feb. 28. During the COS window, students may edit their COS Google Form as many times as they wish.

We look forward to planning for another great year with you!

Northfield IB Programming Insights

International Baccalaureate Professional Roundtable

On Thursday, Feb. 20, Northfield will host an International Baccalaureate (IB) "roundtable," for IB staff from schools around the region to learn about Northfield's successful efforts at offering IB Language and Literature to all students.

This event will bring positive publicity to Northfield and allow us to share our successes with IB programming; in addition to engagement with thought partners to troubleshoot challenges. As the IB For All approach expands across the Rocky Mountain region, Northfield hopes to continue to have more opportunities to collaborate and learn from other schools' experiences with IB.

International Baccalaureate Chemistry Students in Action

Last week, students enrolled in IB Chemistry engaged in internal assessments (IAs). IAs combine science and math to test hypotheses through hand-on experiences with many household items, including fruit juice, avocadoes, beets and more. Watch a few student interviews.

IB Chemistry is an experimental science course combining academic study with the acquisition of laboratory skills while students develop a wide range of practical skills to increase their facility in the use of mathematics. It also allows students to develop interpersonal and information technology skills with an emphasis on experimental work.

Guidance for Respiratory Illnesses

DPS Nursing and Student Health Services reminds all families of the following guidance for respiratory illnesses.

How are viruses spread?
Respiratory viruses are primarily spread through contact with droplets from the nose and throat of an infected person, typically via coughing and sneezing. These viruses can also spread when someone touches a surface that has the virus on it, as they can survive on hard surfaces for several hours and on skin for a shorter period. Frequent hand washing is crucial in reducing the spread.

General Health Practices:

  • Hand Hygiene: Wash hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

  • Cough/Sneeze Etiquette: Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or your sleeve when coughing or sneezing. Dispose of tissues in the trash immediately.

  • Surface Cleaning: Regularly clean and disinfect high-touch areas such as doorknobs, mobile devices, countertops, and tables.

  • Avoid Close Contact: Refrain from close interactions, including kissing, sharing eating utensils, or shaking hands with individuals showing cold-like symptoms.

  • Flu Vaccination: Get your flu vaccine to help reduce the spread of illness.

By following these practices, we can help reduce the transmission of respiratory illnesses in our schools and protect the health of everyone in our community.

Updated Covid-19 Guidelines

In March 2024, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated its respiratory virus guidance for people with COVID-19. The updates align with guidance for other respirator viruses, including the flu and RSV. Review the complete guidelines.
