Northfield Principal Resident Mr. Brian Cochran

Hello Nighthawks,

At Northfield High School, we are dedicated to growing the best students, educators, and leaders to help our school and community thrive. As you may know, Mr. Brian Cochran currently serves as principal resident at Northfield. He has done a fantastic job of taking on leadership duties and ensuring that our students, staff and community meet the high goals we have in place.

As part of the DPS Learn to Lead Principal Residency program and to support candidates on their leadership journey, Mr. Cochran will embark on a two week Acting Principal Experience starting Monday, Jan. 13, and ending Monday, Jan. 27. During this time, I will be out of the building embarking on a variety of professional development opportunities to help me grow my practice as a leader for our school and community. Mr. Cochran and I are meticulously planning for this experience and I know he is ready to lead our community. In my absence, Mr. Cochran will have support from various mentors throughout DPS.

I will miss our students and staff over the two weeks I am away; but know that I am leaving them in great hands and look forward to reconnecting with our community on Tuesday, Jan. 28, when I resume my role as principal at Northfield High School.

2024/25 School Year Course & Activities Fees

Annual registration fees for activities, software, Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) testing, etc., vary by grade level at Northfield. Some courses and programming have associated fees, as well. All fees are payable via MySchoolBucks (MSB), an online payment system. All legal guardians can access MSB directly through the MSB website or through the DPS Parent Portal. For assistance with MSB, please utilize the user guide. Review Northfield’s Beginning of Year Letter for specific grade-level fees on page 3.

IB exams are $123 per subject and offer students the opportunity to earn college credit with qualifying scores. Most students leave Northfield with at least three college credits, and some with as many as 30 credits based on their achievement on IB exams. One-hundred percent of the cost of exam fees is paid to IB; Northfield retains $0 of exam registration fees. Students who wish to sign up for IB exams that they did not initially sign up for will be charged a $39 late fee for each late exam until Wednesday, Jan. 15. Conversely, students wishing to withdraw from an exam can do so until Tuesday, Jan. 14 to receive a full refund. After this date, no refunds will be given, and no additional registrations can be made. For IB late registrations, withdrawals, or other issues, please contact Northfield IB Coordinator, Mr. Peter Wright.

Families who qualify for Free and Reduced Lunch (FRL) are eligible for decreased or eliminated school-based fees and testing costs.

Principles of Biology Students Dissect Sheep Hearts

Heart Dissection
Heart Dissection x2

Students enrolled in Northfield's Career Development & Technical Education (CTE) Principles of Biology course dissected sheep hearts this week. Students completed final autopsy reports following a mock crime scene investigation, and this was a chance for them to compare models made in class with a real heart.

CTE courses enhance a student's high school experience by providing real-world skills and practical knowledge to prepare them for college and careers. Through relevant, engaging, project-based courses and experiential learning opportunities in Business, Computer Technology, and Biomedical Sciences, students receive hands-on training, mentoring and internships from employers in their community. CTE makes school more relevant, granting students the opportunity to graduate from Northfield High School with college credit (course dependent), industry experience, invaluable professional skills, and even certifications. Learn more about CTE at Northfield.

FAFSA/CASFA Forms Now Open; DSF Assistance Available

If your Class of 2025 senior has applied to at least one college, congratulations to them on completing an important step on their post-secondary education journey! Now is the time to make sure they take the next steps toward college/university enrollment.

All seniors need to create/open their student portals and review emails from colleges about how to complete this step. Second, students interested in financial aid can apply using either the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the Colorado Application for State Financial Aid (CASFA), to see if their family qualifies for any federal, state, and/or institutional scholarships, grants, loans, and/or work study.

For assistance with the completion of either financial aid option, review the step-by-step instructions. As a reminder, seniors can visit Northfield's Denver Scholarship Foundation (DSF) Future Center next week on Wednesday, Dec. 18, or Thursday, Dec. 19, any time during the school day.

IB History Students Participate in Escape Room Scenario

escape room
escape room clues

Earlier this week, Northfield’s International Baccalaureate (IB) History classes headed to the library to participate in an escape room scenario based around Apartheid in South Africa. Students played the role of anti-apartheid fighters under house arrest following the Rivonia Trial. They used their knowledge from IB History to solve clues and unlock a box containing the spare key to escape before being sent to Robben Island to serve a life sentence.

Northfield High School offers one of the fastest growing and most successful IB Diploma Programmes in the state of Colorado. Through rigorous coursework, independent research, and community service, students develop the skills to understand the world as it is while also reimagining what it could be.
