NEC 2026-27 School Year Updates

Dear NEC Families,

In case you missed the announcement last week, I am writing to share an important and exciting development regarding the future use of our school building. Following careful planning and consideration by the district and school leadership, we are pleased to announce that beginning in the 2026–2027 school year, Montbello Career and Technical High School (MCT) will be co-located in our building.

This will not be a merger with MCT. They will remain students of Montbello Career and Technical High School with their own administration, staff, and programming.

The reason for the co-location

In 2024, the Denver voters approved the $975 million bond that included three innovation hubs. With these increased support and funds from the Denver community it will allow DPS to remodel the existing MCT school building and open the first innovation hub school in the Far Northeast.

When it opens in August of 2027, the new innovation hub will provide students with the opportunity to take accelerated courses in uniquely specialized and high-interest courses such as Aviation Pilot, Drafting and Design, and Web Design. Five programs will open to students in the region for the 2027-2028 school year, with a program expansion to others in the following years. Students who complete these year-long, half-day courses will also earn industry-recognized certifications, such as Autodesk AutoCAD for computer-aided drafting. This certification supports students in gaining entry-level positions in highly sought-after career fields, all at no cost to the student and their family.

Community meetings will be held

I understand that you will have questions about the logistical details of sharing our building and how the two school cultures and programs will thrive together in one facility. We are actively working through these operational plans to ensure a successful transition for every student and will share those details once they are finalized.

There will be a series of informational town halls in the coming weeks to share detailed plans and answer your questions. Those dates, times, and locations will be announced as soon as they are set.

We are confident that this co-location will usher in a new era of growth and success for our students.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Warren
