Denver - At their scheduled meeting tonight, the Denver Public Schools Board of Education voted 5-2 to extend the contract of Superintendent Dr. Alex Marrero.
The new contract includes the following changes.
The contract end date was extended until June 2028.
The performance pay/bonus structure has been removed.
The Board will now need a supermajority vote of 5-2 for removal of the Superintendent without cause. Under the current contract, a simple majority was needed.
The Board will be required to provide a 90-day notice of termination without cause. Previously, the contract listed a 60-day notice.
Dr. Marrero’s annual salary will remain the same. He will continue to be eligible for a cost of living increase each year in accordance with what other non-affiliated DPS staff receive.
“I am deeply honored by the trust and confidence the Board has placed in me with this contract extension,” said Dr. Marrero. “Together, we will continue to build a future where every DPS student has the opportunity to thrive. We are not perfect, but I firmly believe that we have turned a corner and are headed in the right direction. I look forward to working alongside our dedicated staff, families, and community to continue reaching new heights."
"Extending Dr. Marrero’s contract reflects our confidence in his leadership and the direction Denver Public Schools is headed,” said DPS Board of Education President Dr. Carrie A. Olson. “This extension is not just a commitment to the Superintendent, but to the continued success and stability of DPS and our students and staff."
The contract will not be official and available for review until it has been executed by Dr. Marrero.
