Jaguar Journal

Dear Merrill Families,

We had a wonderful week! Students have been actively creating, collaborating, and sharing what they learned. As we enter Week 5 of Quarter 3, we want to share two important reminders about attendance and cell phones. On Friday, Feb. 6, you will receive from DPS, an update showing your student’s attendance percentage and whether they are considered chronically absent. Regular attendance (95% or higher) helps students build strong academic skills and social‑emotional connections; at Merrill, we notice, we care, and we are dedicated to progress — not perfection.

We also ask that students keep cell phones in their backpacks or lockers, not on their person. If a phone is found on a student during the school day, it will be turned in to the main office and must be picked up by a parent/guardian at the end of the day. Please help by avoiding texting your student during school hours; smartwatches or other wearables used for texting or social media will also be collected and held for parent pickup. Thank you for your partnership in supporting a positive learning environment

Have a wonderful weekend,

Merrill Leadership

Cool Classroom! Spanish Field Trip, Ms. Rozo and Ms. West’s Classes

Several students in Spanish classes had an incredible opportunity to go to the Museo de las America, the premier Latin American art museum in Denver. They not only learned and observed  the positive contributions Latin Americans have had in art, but they got to create art pieces of their own!

From the library!

February is Black History Month. It is an important time to honor and celebrate the contributions and resilience of Black individuals throughout history. Here are some book recommendations that can be found on SORA.

Community Resources

Energy Assistance for Families

As the colder months approach, we want to ensure that there are no families in our Denver Public Schools (DPS) community facing utility disconnections or struggle to keep their homes warm.

The Southeast Community Hub is an officially approved partner of Energy Outreach Colorado (EOC). This partnership allows us to provide direct energy bill assistance and resources to income-qualified DPS families.

You can learn more about the programs and resources available through EOC here: https://www.energyoutreach.org

Through this partnership, the Hub can assist families with:

Bill Payment Assistance: Emergency help with past-due energy bills to prevent shut-offs.

Heating System Repair: Access to the Crisis Intervention Program for emergency furnace repairs.

Weatherization: Helping families reduce long-term energy costs through home efficiency.

The following resources are available for students, families and staff:

Student and Family Resources (food, clothing, heating support and mental health resources).

Employee Wellness Resources (health, mental and financial wellness resources).

Community Hubs Resources (classes, workshops and workforce development)
