Jaguar Journal

Dear Merrill Families,

We had a great short week with your students! 6th grade students had a blast at International Towne and our Multi-Language Learners did a phenomenal job taking ACCESS! We’re a few weeks into quarter three, and now is a perfect time to sit down with your child to check grades and help them stay on top of any missing assignments. Below are some helpful questions you can ask about their learning:

-What was your favorite thing you learned this week?

-What was the most challenging part of your schoolwork?

-Do you have any missing assignments? How can I help you complete them?

-Are there any upcoming projects or tests you’re worried about?

Please avoid texting or calling your child during school hours, as students are being asked to keep phones put away; if you need to get a message to them, call the main office and we’ll support you.

Good attendance helps students succeed—Merrill’s current rate is 91.8% (our goal is 95%), so during cold and flu season please check the school’s health guidelines(How Sick is Too Sick guidance document) before keeping your child home; if they’re well enough, we encourage them to attend the full day. With colder weather here, please send your child in warm, weather-appropriate clothing since we go outside whenever possible.

Finally, a reminder that 8th graders will visit Skate City on Friday, 1/30 for their Quarter 3 celebration—contact Mr. Franklin with any questions. Have a wonderful weekend with your families.

Thank you for your partnership.

Merrill Leadership

Dear Family,

Beginning on January 12th, Multilingual Learners (MLLs) in grades K-12 will participate in the WIDA ACCESS state assessment. This assessment measures a student’s English language skills in the areas of speaking, listening, reading, and writing. ACCESS is used by classroom teachers to determine the level of language support that a student may need during instruction. With this information, we are able to monitor student progress on an annual basis and determine when a student is ready to be placed in mainstream instruction.

Merrill Middle School will be administering the assessment on the following days.

January 15, 20, 21 - 8th grade MLLs

January 22, 27, 28 - Newcomers

January 27, 28, 29 - 7th grade MLLs

February 3, 4, 5 - 6th grade MLLs

Speaking and make-ups will be occurring throughout the testing window. Review this ACCESS Schedule to see when your child will be testing.  Students best demonstrate what they know after getting plenty of sleep the night before testing and eating a healthy breakfast in the morning.  To keep your child from missing instruction due to makeup testing, ensure that they arrive on-time for school and that appointments and vacations are planned for non-testing days.

Your support during ACCESS is appreciated as state assessments are vital tools that contribute towards student success.

If you have general questions regarding the assessment, please contact your student’s teacher.

Thank you,

Patrice Underwood

School Principal

Boys Volleyball

Practices will be Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-5:15pm

Girls Volleyball

The Merrill Girls Volleyball practice team continues to improve with each practice. The girls have begun playing full games and are now consistently setting the ball with three hits nearly every time it comes to their side. I am incredibly proud of their growth in such a short amount of time.  Parents, thank you for your continued support getting your player to school early!

Schedule for Next Week:

Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 7:30–8:40 a.m.

The Merrill Girls Volleyball team also had a great week, winning both matches. The girls are learning a higher-level offense and defense that they will use at the high school level, and their communication and teamwork on the court have been outstanding. I am very proud of how much they have grown together as a team.

Parents, thank you so much for your continued support and for picking up your girls promptly at 5:30 p.m. I truly appreciate it.

Schedule for Next Week:

Monday: Game at Merrill vs. Grant Beacon at 5:15 p.m.

Tuesday: Practice from 4:00–5:30 p.m.

Wednesday: Practice from 4:00–5:30 p.m.

Thursday: Game at Merrill vs. McAuliffe at 5:15 p.m.

Thank you again for your support!

Best regards,
Wendy Shepard
