Jaguar Journal

Dear Merrill Families,

This week was packed with exciting events and activities for our Merrill students. The 7th graders celebrated the end of Quarter 2 at Sky Zone, where they enjoyed fun and laughter. Our Newcomers and MIS students attended the Stock Show, experiencing a variety of activities from roping to the petting zoo.

ACCESS testing has commenced for our talented multi-language learners. More details about the testing schedule are provided below.

DPS offers free breakfast for all students. To participate, students should pick up breakfast at the STEM lab door between 8:25-8:40 a.m. To maintain a healthy and clean environment, breakfast will no longer be consumed in the classroom.

Next week, our 6th graders will attend International Towne, where they'll engage in global economics through hands-on leadership in a model world economy. This program teaches trade, currency exchange, and financial literacy. Half of the students will attend on Wednesday, January 21st, and the other half on Thursday, January 22nd.

Enjoy a wonderful three-day weekend with your students, and we look forward to seeing them on Tuesday!

"If you can't fly then run, if you can't run then walk, if you can't walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward."- Martin Luther King Jr

Thank you for your partnership.

Dear Family,

Beginning on January 12th, Multilingual Learners (MLLs) in grades K-12 will participate in the WIDA ACCESS state assessment. This assessment measures a student’s English language skills in the areas of speaking, listening, reading, and writing. ACCESS is used by classroom teachers to determine the level of language support that a student may need during instruction. With this information, we are able to monitor student progress on an annual basis and determine when a student is ready to be placed in mainstream instruction.

Merrill Middle School will be administering the assessment on the following days.

January 15, 20, 21 - 8th grade MLLs

January 22, 27, 28 - Newcomers

January 27, 28, 29 - 6th grade MLLs

February 3, 4, 5 - 7th grade MLLs

Speaking and make-ups will be occurring throughout the testing window. Review this ACCESS Schedule to see when your child will be testing.  Students best demonstrate what they know after getting plenty of sleep the night before testing and eating a healthy breakfast in the morning.  To keep your child from missing instruction due to makeup testing, ensure that they arrive on-time for school and that appointments and vacations are planned for non-testing days.

Your support during ACCESS is appreciated as state assessments are vital tools that contribute towards student success.

If you have general questions regarding the assessment, please contact your student’s teacher.

Thank you,

Patrice Underwood

School Principal

Cool Classroom! Mr. Stock's Integrated 2 Math Classes

Students in Mr. Stock’s Integrated 2 class went medieval to study the math behind catapults. They designed their device, and  tested the trajectory of the catapult using their calculations. As a bonus, students in Mr. Stock’s class all became better dancers… because they used an algo-rhythm!
