Over the past week, we had the privilege of spending time with a few of our Native American students. We had meaningful conversations about what their heritage means to them and what they would like others to understand about their culture.
With pride, they shared stories about the family and tribal traditions they continue to uphold, each one a link that connects them to their ancestors and community. These customs not only foster a deep sense of belonging but also serve as a source of strength, helping to preserve the stories, values, and practices passed down through generations. For example, powwows are powerful celebrations that include songs, dances, and ceremonies, with the drum symbolizing the heartbeat of both the Earth and the community.
“Powwows are a really fun way to celebrate our culture with our community. It’s a celebration of the spirit,” said Ladanian Good Lance, 8th grade.
One student also spoke about the circle of life and the importance of honoring loved ones who have passed. "It helps you appreciate things, look on the good side of things, and enjoy every minute," explained Jamilah Maldonado, 6th grade.
A theme that came up in nearly every conversation was food—specifically, Fry Bread. This iconic Native American dish, made from flour and lard, is enjoyed both sweet, with brown sugar and cinnamon, or savory, as a taco. It’s a beloved part of their heritage that brings families together.
The most powerful message that resonated from the students was their desire for more people to recognize and appreciate Native American traditions, culture, and contributions to society. Many of the innovations we take for granted today, such as snowshoes, kayaks, baby bottles, syringes, and even lacrosse, originated with Native Americans. Their pioneering advancements in agriculture and use of plants for medicine laid the foundation for modern medicines, including aspirin.
We encourage you to take the time to learn more about Native American heritage and the invaluable contributions of these communities to our world. Maybe whip up a batch of Fry Bread and enjoy! Fry Bread Recipe
