McAuliffe School News

November 14, 2024

Over the past week, we had the privilege of spending time with a few of our Native American students. We had meaningful conversations about what their heritage means to them and what they would like others to understand about their culture.

With pride, they shared stories about the family and tribal traditions they continue to uphold, each one a link that connects them to their ancestors and community. These customs not only foster a deep sense of belonging but also serve as a source of strength, helping to preserve the stories, values, and practices passed down through generations. For example, powwows are powerful celebrations that include songs, dances, and ceremonies, with the drum symbolizing the heartbeat of both the Earth and the community.

“Powwows are a really fun way to celebrate our culture with our community. It’s a celebration of the spirit,” said Ladanian Good Lance, 8th grade.

One student also spoke about the circle of life and the importance of honoring loved ones who have passed. "It helps you appreciate things, look on the good side of things, and enjoy every minute," explained Jamilah Maldonado, 6th grade.

A theme that came up in nearly every conversation was food—specifically, Fry Bread. This iconic Native American dish, made from flour and lard, is enjoyed both sweet, with brown sugar and cinnamon, or savory, as a taco. It’s a beloved part of their heritage that brings families together.

The most powerful message that resonated from the students was their desire for more people to recognize and appreciate Native American traditions, culture, and contributions to society. Many of the innovations we take for granted today, such as snowshoes, kayaks, baby bottles, syringes, and even lacrosse, originated with Native Americans. Their pioneering advancements in agriculture and use of plants for medicine laid the foundation for modern medicines, including aspirin.

We encourage you to take the time to learn more about Native American heritage and the invaluable contributions of these communities to our world. Maybe whip up a batch of Fry Bread and enjoy! Fry Bread Recipe

McAuliffe at Smiley Foundation - 2024 Colorado Gives Day Website is LIVE!

It’s that time of year! McAuliffe at Smiley Foundation is again participating in Colorado Gives Day on Tuesday December 10th.  Donations made before that date will be matched by generous sponsors and receive part of an Incentive Fund made possible by Colorado Gives Foundation and FirstBank. Last year, we were part of the success as donors came together raising $54 million to help local non-profit organizations and our communities thrive.

Similar to a PTA at other schools, the McAuliffe at Smiley Foundation is a non-profit organization with the mission to support McAuliffe’s amazing staff and students and fill gaps left by DPS funding.  Specifically, we would like your help to:

  • Improve infrastructure for our 75+ year old building

  • Support our sports programs so athletes can build character and life-long memories

  • Assist students and their families with critical needs so they can focus on being students

  • Appreciate and support our amazing staff so they can continue to provide excellent education to our students

  • Provide educational trip scholarships, because lack of funds shouldn’t constrain students from getting a full McAuliffe educational experience

To further encourage giving, we have created an all-school House Competition.  The house with the highest NUMBER of donations will earn themselves a dress down day as a reward!  When you donate at the McAuliffe at Smiley Foundation page, indicate which HOUSE to credit with the donation.  Also, students are encouraged to make donations themselves with the Community Office.  All donations count, no matter the amount!

Missing Student Work

Our top priority is ensuring that all students are not only learning but also well-prepared for high school. To support this, we do not assign traditional homework; instead, we allocate time at the end of each class—typically at least 20 minutes—for students to complete their work. If students do not finish during this time, they will have homework. Staying on top of assignments is critical for academic progress and meeting grade-level standards.

If a student has missing work, we have a refocus process in place, which requires students to attend a morning session to complete any outstanding assignments. Missing work can be turned in up until the unit assessment. After the unit is completed, students still have the opportunity to make up assignments for two weeks, after which no further late work will be accepted.

Your child should be sending you a weekly progress report that includes their current grades and any missing assignments. If you are not receiving these emails, please reach out to your child’s grade-level Assistant Principal.

We believe that staying on top of schoolwork is a shared responsibility, and we encourage you to engage in conversations with your child about their progress and any missing assignments. Your support in this process is essential to their success. Thank you for your partnership in helping all students thrive!

Important Building Reminder - Visitors Must Check in @ Main Office

Your child’s safety is our top priority. Any non-staff adult entering the Smiley campus must enter through the main doors, sign in at the office and wear a visitor badge while in the building and on campus. For more information on our building policies please check our Family Handbook.

Iceland End-of-Year Trip

It is not too late to sign up for Iceland (June 9-18th)! There are a few open spots.  Contact Danielle Green (Danielle_Green@dpsk12.net) to learn more information about this trip of a lifetime!
