Dear McAuliffe Families,
To me, Black History Month is a time for everyone to reflect on and celebrate the contributions of Black individuals to shaping the world we know today. When you consider the last 300 years, we’ve been through enslavement, to being "free-ish," to being free yet still limited. Imagine where we would be if society allowed people of color to truly grow and flourish, without barriers. We would surpass what we see today. This starts in our schools.
It's crucial that we create environments where ALL students feel welcomed and loved. Rather than putting limits on them, we should help guide them, teaching them the way with patience, grace, and compassion.
As a Dean of Students, I operate with the belief that “It’s relationships, not programs, that change children. Young people thrive when adults care about them on a one-on-one level and when they feel a sense of belonging in a caring community.” This quote rings true to me every day. Students want to do better when they know they are supported and cheered on. When I engage with my students, I don't just focus on the immediate reason they're in my office—I focus on the whole student. I dig deep to uncover the root of the issue so I can guide them toward the right direction.
Having an understanding of how my ancestors were treated, I refuse to disrespect or degrade anyone. I come to work each day with the mindset of how I can help my students feel welcomed, loved, safe, and truly understood. My work is not just about discipline; it’s about ensuring that every student is given the space and support they need to thrive, regardless of their background.
Let us continue to build communities where every child, especially those from historically marginalized backgrounds, can rise to their fullest potential. This is not just about Black History Month; it’s about every day we spend in schools and beyond, ensuring we create spaces that celebrate diversity, foster growth, and build a sense of belonging for everyone.
