NEW LOOK!

We are working with a new platform so our newsletter will look a little different from now on. Please bear with us while we make some changes in the upcoming weeks!

Hello McAuliffe Community,

It has been a breath of fresh air for students to fill our halls with energy, excitement and a small tinge of adolescent body odor. If you are anything like my wife, you are also enjoying the return to consistency of the school year. This year has started off very well. Students are engaged in class and teachers are delivering the high quality, academically rigorous lessons that McAuliffe is known for.

In these first weeks of school our staff is working hard to develop a safe, nurturing community for all of our students. To that end I would ask that each family commit to leading conversations in their homes as to what are the components of a strong community. The strength of our community lies in our diversity, and in our shared belief that the richest communities embrace one another and our various strengths.

Please encourage your child to become involved during the beginning of the year with athletics and enrichments beginning the year. These offerings are a key component in helping your child feel a greater connection to our school, and our community.  Please see details below on how you can sign your student up for before-school enrichments or early fall prep athletics. To see when other sports happen throughout the year please visit our website.

~ Gus Johnson, 6th Grade Assistant Principal

All enrichments are free of charge but parents/guardians MUST sign up their student prior to a student attending a class.  Attendance will not be taken in enrichments but enrollment is still required so that we may plan for appropriate staffing, space, and supplies. Students may choose to attend an enrichment every day they are offered (Monday – Thursday) or just sign up for a specific day or class. Enrichment offerings will change each semester. All students signed up for an enrichment will enter through the main doors on Holly St.

To sign-up your student for any of the enrichments below please click here. Questions regarding Enrichments please reach out to Sherry Beardshear at Sherry_Beardshear@dpsk12.org

Academic Check Fridays

This year we will begin a new initiative called Academic Check Fridays to help students garner more ownership over their school work and grades, to help keep you more informed on how they are performing academically, and to help better prepare them with executive skills for high school.

Expect to receive an email every Friday from your student during homeroom. They will be given a template to complete and will be required to use information that they look up in both student portal and Schoology to lay out their academic progress. At the end of the email they will include a goal for themselves on something they want to change or accomplish over the next week.

We hope this work not only helps you better know how your child is performing, but also gives you some insight into where they would like to do better and allows you to support them in meeting their goals. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to anyone on your child's grade level culture team to discuss.

Join the MSF Board!

The MIS foundation is a great way to connect with the school.  We are looking for a few parents who would like to help make an impact by becoming a member of the board! It doesn’t take a lot, just a passion for our students, a willingness to help us fundraise and an hour of your time once a month on Tuesday evening.   If you are interested in joining us as a board member please contact Michelle_moore@dpsk12.net

The goal of the Foundation is to financially support McAuliffe International School in achieving its mission of creating a high-performing middle school that prepares all students for success in high school, college and life. The McAuliffe at Smiley Foundation helps address the funding gap between what the school district provides, and the additional resources McAuliffe students and families need. We work with the school administration to prioritize school needs, identify which needs require additional funding, and then execute fundraising campaigns to address those needs.  For more information on the MSF priorities and accomplishments, please visit the McAuliffe At Smiley Foundation website.

Become a McAuliffe Sponsor!

Are you a local business looking for ways to support a school? Or are  you a local dentist or optometrist looking to sponsor a student that needs braces or glasses? Maybe a local organization looking to get involved with the biggest middle school in the neighborhood. If this is you, please join us as a McAuliffe International sponsor! Our sponsors are local businesses that support in various ways, from offering services, providing support to our teachers with supplies, or donating to different groups such as drama, athletics, clubs and more! Becoming a sponsor for our school means that you are not only supporting the school needs, but also being a part of our community in a bigger way. If you are interested in becoming a sponsor for our school, please reach out to michelle_moore@dpsk12.net for more information,

Let's Be Good Neighbors!

A reminder to always be respectful of the houses in the neighborhoods. Students who walk please stay off of private properties, stay on sidewalks and please do not litter. For parents who are dropping students off, try not to block driveways. We always want to represent McAuliffe well and be respectful of the homes in the community.

New Branding at McAuliffe
We have made some improvements to the building over the summer! There are new decals hung all over the school to show our school pride! This was a huge project done by a local business and done with a lot of love and care. We want to keep these spaces looking good for the entire year and beyond!  Students need to be aware that if they remove or vandalize these items they will be responsible for the cost to replace the damage. We can’t wait for everyone to see how great the building looks!
