A NOTE FROM PRINCIPAL SHELLEY DULSKY . . .
Lincoln Elementary
A NOTE FROM PRINCIPAL SHELLEY DULSKY . . .
Hello Lincoln Families,
Fall has finally arrived! The cool mornings and the leaves falling in our neighborhoods finally signal a change in the seasons. Fall brings one of Lincoln’s biggest family events - Fall Fest! Please drop by tomorrow, Saturday, October 19th between 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. for the opportunity to spend time with Lincoln families and pet farm animals, buy pumpkins, and, if you’re brave enough, scare yourself in the Haunted House, This is an event that should not be missed! A big thank you to all volunteers, and PTSA, for making this event possible.
This edition of the Ledger includes many photos of our students’ learning and growing at school. Read about Culture Walks in 1st grade, the amazing Celebrity Crossing Gaurd Walk & Roll morning, and an inspiring presentation attended by our 4th, 5th, and 6th graders from a former Lincoln student. We’ll be sharing more of the “goings on” at Lincoln in each issue of the Ledger.
Finally, the DPS “Your Voice/Tu Voz” Family Survey is open now through Friday, Nov. 1. This survey focuses on measuring district outcomes, and its findings directly impact students and families.
Families can access the survey link here. Make an impact by taking the DPS Your Voice/Tu Voz family survey and let our district leaders hear the voices of Lincoln families.
Enjoy the fall weather, and I hope to see many of you at Fall Fest.
Warmly,
Principal Shelley Dulsky

CULTURE WALK IN MS. HEIDI'S 1st GRADE CLASSROOM
First graders in Ms. Heidi's class completed a "Culture Case" craft during their first social studies unit to share about the many cultural backgrounds and identities represented in the classroom, while celebrating our similarities and differences!
Lincoln's Celebrity Crossing Guard Walk & Roll to School Day was Amazing!
National Walk/Roll to School Day was Wednesday, October 9th. Lincoln students and families showed up to to celebrate traveling to school using "active transportation" with an emphasis on safety. Our celebrity crossing guards included Animal Planet's Dr. Kevin Fitzgeralk, Happy the Cow from Horizon Organic Milk, and Ken Clark, traffic reporter from Channel 2.
Our students walked, rode their bide, scootered and skateboard to school. Let's continue "walking & rolling" to school this year. It is great for the environment and great for each and every Lincoln Lynx!
A HUGE thank you to our amazing crossing guards and DPS Safety Team!
Cross-Age Buddies
One of the powerful benefits of a pre-K through sixth grade school is the opportunity for our older students to inspire, mentor and lead our younger students. All of our students have the opportunity to make important connections with one another through our "cross-age buddies" program.
Recently Ms. Algoe's 4th and 5th graders spent time sharing snacks and reading in the dark with Ms. Catherine's Primary Montessori class.
David Solano Inspires our 4th, 5th and 6th Graders
David Solano, a former DPS student who attended Lincoln, visited and shared his inspiring life story with our 4th, 5th, and 6th graders. Mr. Solano, a disabled Hispanic, grew up near Lincoln Elementary but was not allowed to enroll because of his disability. His family advocated for the enrollment decision to be changed, and eventually, David became a Lincoln Lynx.
Mr. Solano has achieved great success and recently published his first book. He is currently in his 26th year as an educator in Arizona and was recently named Coach of the Year by the Phoenix Suns. In addition, Mr. Solano was recognized as a Legend and Legacy by the NCAA for his community work.
Mr. Solano was welcomed back to Lincoln last week. He shared his story with our students and taught them about the "power of yet." His work and his life have inspired our students to embrace an attitude of positivity and resilience.
Helpful Information from Nurse Rachel . . .
Here is some helpful information related to common health conditions we see at school and the DPS policies we follow.
Pink eye(conjunctivitis) presents as redness or swelling, watery eyes, a gritty feel, and crusty discharge around the eye.
If we suspect your student has pink eyes, we will call you and let you know. We do not send home or require your students to stay home unless they have a fever (greater than 101.4f). Please reach out to your provider to determine if treatment is needed. A warm compress can help relieve discomfort. Encouraging frequent hand hygiene is the best way to prevent the spread.
Head Lice:
If we are to suspect lice on a student at school we don't send the student home that day. We notify parents and tell them that the student has suspected lice and ask the parents to start the treatment of lice before sending their student back to school. If a parent is to find lice on their student as long as treatment is started the student can return to school.
The lice policy is different than in the past and can be uncomfortable. A head lice infestation is not a communicable disease and no health risks have been associated with head lice. Both the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the CDC advocate for the following practices to be discontinued:
whole classroom screening
exclusion for nits or live lice
notification to others except for direct parents/guardians of students with head lice infestations
If you have any questions about the DPS lice policy please don't hesitate to contact the Lincoln Health Office at 720-424-5994.
