Hallett students at their halloween parade

From the Desk of Ms. D

Dear Hawks Community,

Thank you all for coming to our Fall Festivities a couple weeks ago. It was so fun to celebrate Halloween with you all and see our Hawks' amazing costumes. Shout out our Discovery Link crew for putting together a spooktacular haunted hallway!

We've got more holidays coming up: soon it will be Thanksgiving! If you are planning to join us for our Thanksgiving Lunch on Nov. 21, please be sure to return your cash payment and RSVP slip to the front office by Nov. 19. Tickets will be handed out on the day of the event.

Because we have Thanksgiving break the last week of November, this will be our only November newsletter. That means I am including my College Corner tips today! Check them out - Candice's College Corner is at the end of the newsletter.

Warmly,

Ms. D

3rd Grade Night at the Museum

As the holidays get closer, we're hoping you'll consider donating to support our 3rd grade field trip of a lifetime! This would be a wonderful gift for our 3rd graders, and we can't make it happen without your support.

Thank you so much to everyone who has donated and helped us spread the word! We are almost halfway to our goal!

Winter Basketball

Basketball will begin after Thanksgiving break!

Starting Dec. 4, the Hallett basketball team will practice every Wednesday from 4-5:15 p.m. Games begin Feb. 3 and will be either Tuesday or Thursdays at Swigert International School. The season will end on April 12.

Registration costs $35 per student. Students who cannot pay the registration fee can still participate if their parents volunteer to help out (this could including helping with set up, working the door on game days, etc.).

Students need to return signed parental consent forms before they can begin practicing. If your student is interested, ask them to pick up their consent form from Mr. Jay. Once he has the signed form, Mr. Jay will send your child home with directions on how to register online.

Feel free to contact Mr. Jay if you have questions! He can be reached at jayveon_trotter@dpsk12.net.

Celebrating Attendance at Hallett

We’ll be celebrating our Hawks with A+ attendance at our Popcorn & PJs movie party on Nov. 22!

Your Hawk needs 85% attendance during the first trimester to participate. For Hawks that didn’t meet the 85% attendance goal, they’ll get to use this time to catch up on classwork that they’ve missed.

If your student missed the attendance goal during this first trimester, they can try again for the second trimester! We will be counting second trimester attendance through Feb. 28. Help your child achieve 90% attendance so they can join in the next celebration!

Every minute counts towards your child’s attendance. Dropping them off late or picking them up early is counted against their attendance minutes, and more importantly, takes time away from their learning. So make sure your Hawk is on time and present for the whole school day, every day!

We're also celebrating strong attendance with prizes: the Hawk with the highest attendance in each classroom in November will win a FREE lawn sign!

Lawn signs are also available for purchase for $5.

Candice's College Corner

I believe never too early to get your child excited about college! That's why, on the last Thursday of the month, you can expect some college readiness tips from me in your in newsletter. Today's tip: get organized with your child!

We can help students get college-ready by instilling organization skills while they are young. Organizational skills will not only help students prepare, apply for and get accepted into college, they will also be help students succeed in college and in life!

This weekend, consider including your child in your organizing. Start by asking them, "How do you stay organized when you have a lot to keep track of?" Then, share with them how you stay organized! Do you use a paper planner, or maybe a digital calendar? Walk them through it! Show them how you mark events ahead of time and plan your life around those priorities. If you block off time to do important work, explain why that's important. If you set reminders for yourself, share with your child why they are helpful. If you build buffer time into your schedule, explain why that matters!

Use this discussion to encourage your child to plan their own life! You can help your child practice by writing your family's Saturday schedule together.
