Hallett students dissecting a heart

From the Desk of Ms. D

Dear Hawks Community,

April has been a busy month so far! Our 3rd-5th graders took Colorado standardized tests (CMAS); I'm so proud of their hard work. And our basketball and cheer teams finished the season strong - please join me in congratulating our young athletes.

April will continue to be busy - we've got the talent show tonight, no school tomorrow, an Earth Day celebration on April 22, and College Readiness Week April 28-May 2! Read on for more information about these upcoming events and reminders.

Warmly,

Ms. D

College Readiness Week April 28-May 2

College Readiness Week is coming together! We'll have a more detailed schedule of the activities your child can expect soon. In the meantime, we need your help decking Hallett out in college memorabilia!

If you have college pennants or other memorabilia we can display, please feel free to drop them off at the main office. Thank you!

3rd Grade Meet a Designer: May 2

We've started a new tradition at Hallett: 4th grade creates drawings that represent Hallett, 5th grade votes on their favorite drawing, and the winning design will be added to the cover of the following year's student planners!

To get our current 3rd graders excited about designing planner covers next year, we're offering them the opportunity to meet with a real designer. DPS high school student Mya Robinson designed Hallett banners for us this year, and we got the banners professionally printed. Mya will be joining us on the last day of college week, May 2, to unveil the Hallett banners and answer our 3rd graders' questions about design.

We will keep the group small so that the students can have a more meaningful Q&A with Mya. We're asking 3rd graders to write a few sentences about why they want to meet a designer and include 1-2 questions they'd like to ask Mya. The students who write the most thoughtful questions will be invited to meet Mya. Your 3rd grader should receive this assignment from their teacher next week; feel free to talk to them about it and help them brainstorm their questions!

Field Day Volunteers Needed!

Field Day will be Friday, May 9 (in the case of bad weather, we will reschedule for Friday, May 16). The office sells food during field day, and we’re looking for parents to help assemble nachos and hot dogs. If interested please call Yvonne at 720-424-6070. Thank you!

Flag Football Practice Schedule

Mr. Jay will be hosting Hawks Flag Football after school for 5 weeks! He will be working with our 1st - 5th grade girls and boys on football drills, foundational skills, collaboration, and teamwork.

If you've signed your child up for Flag Football, here's what you need to know:

  • Practices will be from 4-4:45 p.m. on the field

  • Monday, April 21: First getting to know you practice (all grades)

  • Every Monday until May 12: 1st-3rd practice

  • Every Wednesday until May 12: 4th and 5th practice

  • Monday May 19: Two 5-on-5 games

Drop Off and Pick Up Reminders

School starts at 8:50 a.m. Make sure your student is on time so they don’t miss valuable learning! Any student who arrives after 8:55 a.m. is considered tardy; our system tracks tardies minute by minute.

If you are picking up your child early, please note that we will not call students down to the office until you are here to sign them out. Thank you for your understanding!

Talking to Your Child About Staying Safe Around Strangers

At Hallett, our number one priority is our students' safety. To help keep our Hawks safe, we recommend talking to your child about how be cautious around strangers.

We recommend reminding your child that a stranger is anyone they don’t know—even if they seem nice. You can emphasize that not all strangers are dangerous, but it's important to be cautious. Teach them to never go anywhere with someone they don’t know, and to always check with a trusted adult first. You can even practice common scenarios together, like what to do if someone offers them a ride or asks for help. Most importantly, remind them it's okay to say "no," run away, and tell a grown-up if something feels wrong.

Thank you for helping us prioritize safety for our Hawks!

Lost and Found

It's spring time in Denver and the weather is all over the place! Many days start out cold and end hot - at Hallett, this means our students are taking off their layers and leaving them at school.

If you notice your child is missing a sweater or jacket, stop by the lost and found in the main office. We will also have lost and found items outside on Field Day, so you can check for your child's items then.

Any items not picked up by the end of the school year will be donated.
