HEADER

Welcome back, Angels! The time has finally come for us to engage in yet another exciting school year. There are so many amazing things in store as we celebrate the 150th year anniversary of our "magnificent temple of learning" a phrase coined by East former principal William Smiley. We look forward to welcoming our new Angels from the class of 2029 and expanding our experience with the classes of 2028, 2027, and 2026. We also look forward to ushering our rising Seniors into a new year and readying them for what's next after their time at East.

A special thank you to all of our staff members for an amazing week of planning to prepare for the year ahead.

Next week can't come soon enough! Go Angels!--- Principal Terita Walker

Registrations must be completed before the first day of school. However, the sooner this is completed the easier it is for our team to plan for the year. If you have questions about registration, please reach out to Yvonne Catbagan directly. Her email is yvonne_catbagan@dpsk12.org.

Counseling Connections

Welcome back for the 2025/26 school year! Schedules will continue to be adjusted up until the first day of school. Please make sure your child checks schoology on the 1st day of school so they can see the most up to date schedule.

Questions about your students schedule?

Schedule Adjustments:

  1. If your student has a gap in their schedule or is enrolled in the wrong level, please advise your student to see their counselor on their first day of school. All counselors will be available to students on Tuesday the 19th in the Commons and in the Counseling Office Wednesday - Friday. Students will see their counselor during their gap or incorrect level period (ex. 4th period gap, student will go see their counselor during 4th period.)

  2. Counselors will also be available during Enrichment in the counseling office.

  3. If your student would like to request an elective change or a different class, it is important that you student fills out the appropriate form at the following link: Schedule Change Form

Please note the following deadlines and procedures:

  • Elective Change Requests: These must be submitted within the first 2 weeks of the semester.

  • Level Changes: If your student needs to change the level of a course, these requests must be completed within the first 6 weeks of the semester and will require additional paperwork.

We kindly ask for your patience as classes are in constant flux, and it may take a few days to determine if we are able to accommodate your requests. The gap in your student’s schedule may remain until we are able to correctly place them in a class. Whether the requested changes are possible or not, we will send your student email communication to keep them informed of the status of their request.

New Opportunity for 9th Grade Course

AP Seminar African Diaspora

AP African Diaspora

This course takes you from the ancient kingdoms of Africa to the modern global diaspora. Through a chronological and thematic lens, we explore the African and African-descended experience as a vital part of human history. You will trace connections between local and global events, uncover parallels across continents, and examine the transformations in culture, politics, and identity that continue to shape the world today.  Along the way, you’ll learn how to research deeply, analyze multiple perspectives, and present your findings.  Please note that students enrolled in this course as a 9th grade year will not be able to take AP Seminar English 2 as a tenth grader due to the AP credit being earned in 9th grade.

A Letter from the District, Heat Day Protocol

Dear East Families,

During the late summer, Denver can occasionally experience extreme heat. There are 29 schools within DPS that have partial or no air conditioning and may experience increased temperatures within the building.

We understand that heat days come with short notice and are an inconvenience for many of our families, and that child care may be an issue for some. We make every effort to ensure that our school stays open and that our students and educators feel comfortable; our number one priority is the safety and well-being of them all. If the temperature within our facility rises to a degree that heat safety guidelines dictate is unsafe to host classes, there is a possibility that our school may have an early-release Heat Day.

In the past few years, Denver Public Schools has put a number of solutions into place to reduce the impact of extreme heat within our schools.

  • We have invested in cooling solutions in our schools over the last seven years.

  • We have purchased portable cooling units for schools without air conditioning.

  • We have provided additional training for staff on how to manage excessive heat.

  • We have created a process to allow schools that do not have air conditioning to call an early release day after an extended forecast of extreme-heat conditions.

In the event that we do need to declare an early-release Heat Day, we will communicate the decision by 5 p.m. the day prior to the early release or closure. An early-release Heat Day notice or closure will immediately be posted on our school’s website. An email and automated robocall will be sent out to alert our families of the change in schedule for the following day.

We are working closely with DPS Transportation to ensure that a modified bus route will be implemented on an early-release Heat Day, and that students will be dropped off at their normal locations. Parents who do not wish for their students to ride the bus home during the heat day's early release do have the option to pick up their students from the school at the designated release time.

We are available to answer questions you may have regarding the possibility of an early-release Heat Day. As always, thank you for your continued support of our school, and we very much appreciate your patience as we successfully navigate through the first weeks of the school year.

Vestibule Update

Following student, parent, and community feedback, Denver Public Schools has decided to postpone this project to allow time to evaluate options. The vestibule project will resume during the 26-27 school year.

A secure vestibule is a small enclosed space inside of a building’s entry doors, designed to enhance security at building entrances by preventing unauthorized access, tailgating, and other security breaches, making it a valuable tool for enhancing safety in various settings, particularly schools.

Electric Scooter Parking

Please park all electric scooters on the south side of the "E" by the bike racks. Scooters should not be parked or operated directly in front of the school or on the "E".
