Dear East Families,
Our school will be sending out a survey about vaping habits in high school to students soon. This anonymous survey will provide us with information around the motivations for students choosing to or not to vape. This data will inform a larger anti-vaping campaign that the district will be working on with our Substance Use Prevention team. Our goal is to better understand why students are choosing to vape and what would motivate them to stop, as well as understand why other students are choosing not to vape.
Individual student responses are kept private and anonymous; they are only viewed in combination with hundreds or thousands of others. Students are not required to take the survey. The survey will remain open until June 6.
The survey will also be sent to the family email on file and responses will be accepted until June 6. If you would like to review the questions in the student survey, please click here.
If you prefer that your student not participate in the vaping survey, please complete this form by May 16 to opt them out.
If you would like to participate in a family focus group around vaping, please complete this form. Food and refreshments will be provided at the focus groups and family participants will receive gift cards for their participation.
Thank you so much for helping us learn more about how we can support our students.
The DPS AAPI story features Ali, a senior at East High School, who helped bring the Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) History class into her school's curriculum. Of Chinese and Thai descent, her culture has helped shape her passions and wants to leave a lasting impact. Ali led the conversations of starting the AANHPI course which led to 45 students taking the course this year. A member of the Asian and Pacific Islander Student Association (APSA) Club, Ali hopes to leave lasting impressions so that students can continue to feel seen in a curriculum that reflects their culture.
Watch her story and help celebrate AAPI month.

Cross-cultural opportunity for Denver families
Live N Learn is an international non-profit centered on making intercultural connections. Live N Learn is coordinating with 15 teenagers from Spain to come to Denver from June 26th-23rd. Host families are needed to help these students experience American family life. Spanish students will be matched with Denver students based on age, gender, and interests and can host for 1-4 weeks. Both the Spanish student and the American student get to participate in two fun, free activities around Denver each week. Hosting is free and families only need to provide students with meals, a bed (can be in a shared bedroom) and a welcoming family environment! It's ok if your family has work and sports or shares homes between parents. Students can even travel with you! Please reach out to Erika at 609-902-6771 / erika@livenlearn.org, visit livenlearn.com/host for more information, or apply directly here.

Student Resources
In our commitment to living our value of Students First, a Student Resource Toolkit has been developed for students who are in sixth grade through 12th grade and is designed to share resources that students and their families can use to create action plans. The Student Toolkit should be used as a resource only. Parents/guardians ultimately decide when and if it is appropriate to share this resource with their children.
For our younger scholars, we encourage families to have conversations about immigration that are age appropriate and promote understanding instead of fear. For tips on how to have those conversations, use this resource and others located within the Family Resource Toolkit.
Additional Resources
