Dear Team DPS,
Today, DPS joins millions across the nation in celebrating the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This day offers us a chance to reflect on his lasting impact and the values he stood for, including the vital role of education.
At DPS, we share a common vision that Every Learner Thrives. To achieve this, each student must have the same opportunities to learn and grow, to know that they are valued and to believe that they can succeed. Our educators even chose Equity as one of our Shared Core Values, meaning equity should inform and be reflected in all that we do.
We recognize the deeply rooted systems of oppression that have historically created inequitable access and distribution of opportunities and resources for those who represent marginalized identities. Advancing educational equity is crucial to creating conditions where we all belong regardless of race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, language or ability
When equity and education go hand in hand, students have greater access to quality education. They can build knowledge, critical thinking and character, unlocking the potential for transformative opportunities and outcomes. This potential drives DPS’s dedication to ensuring that every student has the support they need to thrive. We have made a commitment to build a strong culture of equity in DPS with our students, our team and our community.
Today, let us remember that education is the catalyst behind scholars’ growth and success. Regardless of their background, every student deserves the resources and support to achieve their dreams. If you are looking for ways to celebrate Dr. King’s legacy, please join team and family members all across DPS as we continue to march for freedom and solidarity in the 2025 Denver Marade. There will be an opening ceremony at 9:30 a.m. in City Park with the Marade beginning at 10:45 a.m, hosted by the Denver Martin Luther King, Jr. Colorado Holiday Commission.
In collaboration,
Dr. Alex Marrero
Superintendent
