Dear Team DPS,
Please join me in celebrating Afterschool Professionals Appreciation Week! Afterschool Professionals are skilled individuals who work with children and youth in diverse school and community-based settings. They provide a wide variety of positive developmental relationships and experiences during out-of-school hours. Currently, an estimated 850,000 individuals are practicing members of the afterschool profession in the U.S.
Thank you to the Extended Learning and Community Schools (ELCS) team for their dedication to Out-of-School Time programming. From their flagship program, Discovery Link, to ELCS Enrichment, Middle School Programming at DMLK and ELCSports, this team supports DPS students, families and communities during these crucial times of the day.
The ELCS team, which includes more than approximately 400 staff members, provides programming for scholars and families. This work includes before- and after-school support, Elementary School Athletics, experiential learning, early release, full-day camps on student non-contact days and summer camp. Thank you, ELCS, for the role you play for DPS! Your efforts ensure our students and families have a safe and welcoming space during Out-of-School Time, while also enjoying engaging and impactful experiences in your programs.
Below is more information provided by the National Afterschool Association.
An estimated 7.8 million children participate in afterschool programs each year. And, for every child in an afterschool program, there are two more waiting to get in. Every young person deserves quality afterschool experiences that positively impact their development. It takes skilled professionals to create these experiences. Because of the important role afterschool professionals play in the lives of kids, they deserve recognition and support!
Please join me in taking time this week to thank your school’s Afterschool Professionals for all their hard work!
In collaboration,
Dr. Alex Marrero
Superintendent
