Weekly Follow Up: 2/8/26

Hello!

We had a lovely first week of February. Our staff and students are doing an excellent job of keeping the momentum of January going strong. We just completed our middle of the year (MOY) reading assessments and we have so many celebrations of exceptional growth!

Currently, 61% of our students are reading at or above grade-level according to our mClass/DIBELS assessments and we have reduced the percentage of students reading significantly below grade level to just 24%!

We are currently on track to meet our school-wide goals by the end of the year and, we still have more work to do.

Thank you for your partnership!

Let's go!

Sincerely,

Mr. Janson & Mrs. Watson

Social Emotional Learning Question of the Week

One of our goals this year is to increase building-wide alignment of our weekly social emotional learning lessons, content, and economy of language. With that being said, we have a "SEL Question of the Week" that we discuss in our morning meetings and always aligns to monthly focus. Ms. Watson creates a weekly video to launch the week as well.

Please ask your students about these questions and about the conversations they are having at school!

February's Focus: Community

Week 1: Why is it important to learn about people's stories that might be different than us?

Updates: Climate Champions Student Council + Community Garden Project

We have been working hard behind the scenes for nearly two years to bring the east side of our building back to life.

Climate Champions Student Council: About 40 of our 2nd and 3rd grade students have volunteered to be apart of our Climate Champions Student Council this year! This group meets every other Friday during school and will continue the work started by last year's council in supporting climate conscious initiatives at school and lead the community work to beautify our garden space. Thank you to Mrs. Walker, Ms. Pam and our PTSA volunteers, Ann Terrill and Lane Harlow as well as by Denver Water Youth Educator, Melissa Botteicher for providing this opportunity to our students.

Community Garden: We have been working with the DPS Sustainability Department and DPS Grounds to install a new fence this spring along Downing Street to extend our current garden space all the way to the staff parking lot near 9th Avenue. We are collaborating with SuperBloom to bring a student-led design to life through new irrigation installations as well as the creation of an outdoor classroom space. Finally, we have partnered with SustainEd Farms to plant and grow vegetables in collaboration with our classroom teachers and students.

SustainEd Farms focuses on Growing Food. Growing Knowledge. Growing Justice. We do that by engaging with approximately 50 schools within DPS (ECE - high school) and activating school gardens with students. Our staff run engaging and informational garden-based activities with students, and also maintain school gardens over the summer so that they remain active learning spaces for students in the fall. The food that we harvest from school gardens over the summer goes to our food pantry partners, as well as a no-cost farmers' market.

Construction and planting will begin this spring and carry through the fall to complete different phases of this project.
