Librarian Tip: Listening to stories is fun (even for older kids!)
Did you know that your child is never too old to be read to? That's right--even your middle school student can enjoy the benefits of hearing a story aloud! Hearing stories strengthens the part of the brain associated with visual imagery, story comprehension, and word meaning. It can also give kids the vocabulary to talk about difficult topics, and it may even provide an opportunity to start a conversation with you about something they've been struggling with. Set aside a few minutes a day to read aloud from a chapter book that your whole family will enjoy, or check out a Playaway from the library and listen in the car. Librarians also encourage picture books for all ages! There are many beautiful picture books with stories that appeal to adults and teens. Come by the Rodolfo "Corky" Gonzales Branch and ask a librarian to help you find the perfect book to read aloud to your child.
